Hi everyone, The Bennington Elks Lodge hosted the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department Awards Banquet to recognize and celebrate acts of exceptional service within the community. These awards acknowledge our deputies who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, demonstrating courage, dedication, and a commitment to upholding the law and protecting our citizens. Numerous deputies received awards, and to honor each one, I will highlight their accomplishments and detail the awards they earned. So, without further delay, I would like to thank Sergeant Jason Thomas for his service to the community. Sergeant Thomas was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Citation and the Meritorious Service Citation. The Distinguished Achievement Citation is awarded for a highly credible accomplishment, bringing public recognition to the deputy, the department, or the law-enforcement profession as a result of training, devotion to duty, education, or service to the public. The Meritorious Service Citation is awarded for a highly unusual accomplishment under adverse conditions, with some degree of hazard to the life and limb of the nominee, or death or injury to a third party is prevented. Attached is a detailed occurrence noting Sergeant Thomas’s commitment to the law enforcement profession, including his character and values. Sheriff James A. Gulley Jr. MPA

A flexible work schedule is available for many patrol and special assignment units. Officers who work on flexible schedules work the same number of hours but can have more consecutive days off!

Join us and our partners from OU Institutes for Quality Communities for a public Community Engagement Session to support and inform the Town of Taft’s Safety Action Plan. This come-and-go engagement session invites community members, partners and stakeholders to share their insights on high-risk areas and opportunities for infrastructure improvements. What to Expect: 🔹 Self-Guided Photovoice Tour – Identify key areas for improvement through photography and provide direct feedback. 🔹 Interactive Activity Stations – Share your insights on traffic and pedestrian safety, infrastructure needs, and potential roadway / trail improvements. Help address concerns and priorities using preference boards and other survey tools. 🔹 Community Feedback – provide input to help shape the Town of Taft's Safety Action Plan and help guide future infrastructure improvements. Your participation is essential in guiding recommendations that will influence future safety initiatives. Together, we can make Taft a safer and more walkable community for all. We look forward to your valuable input!

Every single injury and death caused by drunk driving is totally preventable. If you plan to drink, arrange for a ride home or a safe place before going to the social outing. When going out with others, appoint someone to be the designated driver. This person should remain sober during the outing, which means they refrain from drinking alcohol, to ensure everyone gets home safely. Drink responsibly and DO NOT drive while intoxicated🛑

A difesa dei Carabinieri. La perdita di una vita umana, specie se giovane, genera sempre un grandissimo dolore. Questo principio naturale informa da sempre l’esistenza dell’uomo e vale anche per il povero (umanamente) Ramy Elgaml. Però, siccome viviamo in una società democratica che ha le sue regole precise e inviolabili, il pur comprensibile dolore non può e non deve giustificare il comportamento di chi, avendo violato una norma comportamentale di sicurezza che tutti abbiamo l’obbligo di rispettare, cioè quella di fermarsi all’alt intimato dalle Forze dell’Ordine, ha purtroppo pagato con la vita il proprio irrimediabile errore. La magistratura farà chiarezza e, se ci sono stati eccessi colposi (ai quali, lo dico con chiarezza, io non credo) dei militari dell’Arma, pronuncerà le condanne e comminerà le pene. Sono però insopportabili e dolorose le manifestazioni e gli slogan di odio che poche centinaia di esaltati hanno inscenato ieri per le strade di Milano e Torino, durante le quali i Carabinieri sono stati issati sul banco degli imputati e additati al grido di “assassini, assassini”. È infatti incredibile e intollerabile che si imputi ai militari di avere voluto la morte di Ramy e, peggio ancora, di averla dolosamente ricercata perchè egiziano. Desidero far osservare a queste persone che la giusta richiesta di giustizia, cioè di verificare attraverso l’indagine e il giudizio della magistratura che non siano stati commessi dei reati da parte dei Carabinieri, non consente di capovolgere la realtà dei fatti. Se Ramy e il conducente del motociclo si fossero fermati all’alt e non avessero impegnato i militari in un affannoso e durissimo inseguimento per le strade di Milano, egli sarebbe ancora vivo. Bastava fermarsi, rispettare le Forze dell’Ordine e una vita umana non si sarebbe perduta. Tutto il resto, l’urto accidentale (se c’è stato) e le parole pronunciate durante l’inseguimento (palesemente figlie della concitazione e dell’adrenalina che ovviamente e normalmente si genera durante queste situazioni), sono figlie proprio della scellerata decisione dei due centauri di non fermarsi all’alt. Lo voglio affermare con chiarezza: i nostri Carabinieri, e le Forze dell’Ordine tutte, sono gli autentici e insostituibili pilastri dell’ordine pubblico e non possono e non devono essere criminalizzati o addirittura additati come “assassini” e “razzisti”. Lo ripeto, dispiace moltissimo per la morte di Ramy, ma sarebbe bastato un atto semplice e rispettoso per evitare il tragico epilogo. Bastava fermarsi.

The Price of Neglected Forests California's forests have become a ticking time bomb, fueled by overgrown vegetation and dead trees. While the state has invested in forest management, these efforts lag far behind the growing risk. Fuel loads have grown as forest timber harvesting on public lands has dramatically decreased. Today, the state’s forests are primed for catastrophic fires. 2. The Impact of Environmental Regulations on Fire Safety While California’s environmental regulations can be argued to have played a role in preserving its natural resources, many policies have inadvertently contributed to the state’s growing wildfire risk. Restrictions that limit access to public lands or forests for fire mitigation efforts such as thinning, controlled burns, and fire suppression have allowed fuel loads to accumulate, increasing the likelihood of catastrophic fires. 3. Access to Public Lands for Vegetation Management Environmental laws designed to protect wildlife, and sensitive ecosystems often prohibit or restrict access to public lands for large-scale vegetation thinning. For example, forested areas near critical infrastructure or high-risk zones are sometimes off-limits to loggers and fire crews due to concerns over the impact on habitats for endangered species. While some agrue that these protections are necessary for maintaining biodiversity, they also prevent essential work like clearing overgrown brush and dead or diseased trees, which are prime fuel for wildfires. In some cases, the strict enforcement of environmental protection laws creates a paradox: land urgently needing fire mitigation efforts is left untended, increasing danger to both the environment and nearby communities."
