The redevelopment of Canterbury Museum on Rolleston Avenue is revealing heritage facades that have not been seen for decades. The northern gable end of the 1877 Benjamin Mountfort building on Rolleston Avenue is now visible for the first time since it was covered up by the construction of the Centennial Memorial Wing between 1955 and 1958. Large excavators have peeled away a concrete wall, which stood just a couple of centimetres away from the historic stone façade. What they found underneath was the intact wall looking almost exactly as it did in the early 1950s. The heritage walls will be cleaned and revived so they can become a key feature of the new Museum entrance and atrium – viewed through a new glass curtain wall. Famed Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer designed St Margaret’s Church, and it became the last church in Scotland to be built wholly of stone. This significant listed building is home to an equally important pipe organ, which was the first commission for a Scottish church by the leading Victorian organ builder, Henry ‘Father’ Willis. With the church having been closed by the Church of Scotland, the survival of both these precious gems is in danger.

On February 8, the Historical Society will be hosting a special tea to honor one of Red River's finest, Winnie Hamilton. She was among a group of locals who surprised me on the opening day of the Doggone Saloon in 1972 along with Hank & Johnnie Mutz, John & Rosie Brandenburg, Bob & Ester Prunty and a dozen others who welcomed a city boy to town and telling Mac's two big dogs goodbye!!. They where very loving, mountain life people that I have great memories of and the reason I'm trying to save the printed and recorded history of their lives so future folks can enjoy their love of the valley. I will post her second book and 2 hours of a videotaped oral history about the Tall Pine Resort during this month here every Monday the next few weeks. У коментарях під постом про захист курганів пан Віталій виклав посилання на сюжет ТСН. Кому цікаво подивитися, посилання буде у першому коментарі під цим постом. Тож тільки уявіть, скільки ще важливих речей для пізнання нашої історії зберігає наша земля. Тому всі історичні пам’ятки мають суворо охоронятися державою. Будь-яка господарська діяльність там заборонена і треба дотримуватися визначених законом охоронних зон. Всі існуючі кургани мають бути терміново взяті на облік та отримати відповідний статус. Дослідження і розкопки повинні проводитися лише фахівцями: ніяких чорних археологів і самодіяльності. Хто має організувати зазначені заходи і конструювати дотримання чинного законодавства? У високих столичних кабінетах з цього приводу є чітка позиція та розуміння. Сьогодні місцеві військові адміністрації мають значний обсяг повноважень, а допомагати їм буде місцева прокуратура. Треба ще добитися, щоб правоохоронці реагували також на анонімні заяви про злочин. Щоб була якась анонімна гаряча лінія, куди свідомі мешканці Полтавщини будуть писати повідомлення, надсилати фото, відео. Бо всі добре розуміють, що в сільській місцевості люди повинні мати сміливість повідомити на свого сусіда про те, що той на тракторі розорює курган і є загроза знищення історичної памʼятки. Окрема тема - це потужні агропромислові підприємства. Буду просити, щоб із їх керівництвом та власниками провели розʼяснювальну розмову в столиці. Бо не зрозуміло зовсім, як власники сотень тисяч гектарів землі не можуть розминутися із кількома сотками, на яких знаходяться курган або інші історичні памʼятки. Тож шановні мешканці Полтавщини, наша з вами боротьба триває. Весняні роботи починаються зовсім скоро. Маємо всі разом обʼєднатися і добрим словом та громадським тиском зберегти для прийдешніх поколінь нашу історичну спадщину. Продовжуємо допомагати ЗСУ і молимося за Україну! #рідна_полтавщина
