💜Mothers. 🥬Farmers. 💪Breadwinners. Women play a key role in feeding families, communities, and the world. Empowering women is supporting food security for all. Twice a week, market days bring a buzz of activity to aggregation centers across Cox’s Bazar. For women like Senowara, it’s more than a place to sell fresh produce—it’s a step towards independence. As the sole provider for her children and grandchildren, Senowara started farming through WFP’s livelihoods programme in 2021. Today, she grows papayas, raises hens, and sells her produce to local retailers—including those supplying WFP’s ‘fresh food corners’ in Rohingya refugee camps. In one of Bangladesh’s poorest and most disaster-prone districts, these markets are lifelines. They ensure women farmers earn a steady income while providing nutritious food to their communities. #Bangladesh has made remarkable economic progress in recent years, yet 37 million people still face acute food insecurity. It continues to host nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees who rely on humanitarian support to survive. For women like Senowara, their income means the difference between putting food on the table or skipping meals. 🌍WFP’s programmes support women by providing resources and training—empowering them to contribute to the economy, improve food security, and achieve self-sufficiency. If women farmers had the same access to productive resources as men, they could increase overall yields by 20 to 30 percent and total agricultural output by up to 4%—lifting 100 to 150 million people out of hunger. 📸 WFP/Samantha Reinders #IWD2025

Irvine Mayor Larry Agran has always been one to “think globally, act locally.” Agran has a long history of finding ways on the city level to bring solutions to wider problems and make progress in protecting our environment, defending civil rights, and advancing urban planning. So it was no surprise that Agran signed on with the National Mayors Alliance to End Childhood Hunger immediately upon taking office in December. And, it was no surprise that this past weekend, Mayor Agran was in the middle of a 45-acre field in Irvine, alongside dozens of volunteers who harvested more than 30,000 pounds of broccoli. The field was part of the Harvest Solutions Farm. The broccoli was destined for the Second Harvest Food Bank and, ultimately, the dinner table of individuals and families facing food and nutrition insecurity throughout Orange County. “Food insecurity — hunger and malnutrition — is a real concern across America, and here in Orange County,” said Agran, whose office hosted and promoted the weekend event at Harvest Solutions Farm. “This farm and Second Harvest Food Bank are showing us a way to address this problem. Indeed, to not just address it, but to make every Orange County household food secure.” Harvest Solutions Farm — more than 40 acres of agricultural land in Irvine — is a cooperative effort of Second Harvest, Solutions for Urban Ag, and the University of California South Coast Research & Extension Center. “Those most in need are getting some of the best food — right off the farm into their homes,” said A.G. Kawamura, chairman of Solutions for Urban Ag and a former state Secretary of Food and Agriculture. Solutions for Urban Ag works with various localities and landowners to farm agricultural parcels for distribution through food banks and community pantries. “There are wonderful opportunities to reestablish agriculture in urban areas that are not only innovative but also collaborative,” said Kawamura. “That’s what this project is all about.” Produce from the Harvest Solutions Farm is first taken to a warehouse on Marine Way near the Great Park, and from there distributed to Second Harvest and other organizations such as the UCI Basic Needs Center, which operates a brick-and-mortar pantry as well as a mobile pantry for UCI students in need. Agran said he wants the City “to increase its commitment to these efforts,” and would like to see some suitable agricultural land in the Great Park put to use as well. “Unlike other cities, we have the opportunity to ensure food and nutrition security not just for our own residents, but for all of Orange County,” Agran noted. “We actually have the capacity in Irvine to be the breadbasket for Orange County.”

🇺🇦 On November 23, the Third International Summit on Food Security took place, bringing together world leaders, ministers, representatives of international organizations, and leading experts. Coordinated with partners and donors, Ukraine has been successfully implementing the humanitarian initiative "Grain from Ukraine" for the second year now. The program was launched during the First International Summit on Food Security in Kyiv in November 2022. 🤝 Ukraine’s experience in developing and applying innovative agricultural technologies plays a key role in its international agricultural diplomacy. By sharing this expertise, Ukraine aims to help developing countries improve food production, foster sustainable development, strengthen economies, and reduce reliance on external aid. One of the key focuses of the summit was also child nutrition, given its direct influence on children's growth and the long-term health and well-being of nations. Following the summit, the participating countries announced further financial support for the "Grain from Ukraine" initiative. Ukraine remains committed to promoting global food security. Food must never be weaponized, yet that is what Russia seeks to do. All of our efforts, along with those of our partners, must come together to ensure that aid reaches those in need around the world 🌍 #GrainFromUkraine
