More than 150 people suffered injuries after jumping from buildings when a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul. Residents gathered in parks, sat on doorsteps, or waited outside their homes as strong aftershocks shook the city. The Istanbul governor’s office said 151 people received hospital treatment but none were in critical condition. One abandoned building collapsed in central Istanbul without injuries. Energy and water infrastructure remained intact. The quake, centred near Silivri, revived painful memories of previous deadly earthquakes. President Tayyip Erdogan said he was monitoring the situation as authorities advised residents on how to stay safe during possible further tremors.

These decisions will likely lead to higher insurance premiums for numerous homeowners throughout Collin County, as diminished safety ratings lead to increased insurance rates. The county is currently unable to rely on itself for emergency services in these unincorporated areas, as it grapples with issues such as insufficient staffing, outdated infrastructure, and a lack of effective long-term planning; problems that will take a decade to address from the time new leadership is elected. It is essential for the county to negotiate a more mutually beneficial agreement with these cities until it can effectively provide emergency services to the special districts in the unincorporated areas.
