The Westfield Downtown Live! Friday Night Summer Concert Series is back for Week 4 of the 8-week series with the Bad News Jazz & Blues Orchestra. Launched by ArtWorks Westfield in the summer of 2018 in the cozy confines of the performance space adjacent to Mina's Wine & Spirits, this downtown Westfield eight-week summer concert series tradition continues for its 7th season, and second season at the Elm Street Plaza in the heart of the new Downtown Westfield Cultural District. These FREE community musical experiences happens each Friday evening from 7-9pm from June 20th to August 15th with several rain dates built into the mix. Beverages served up by White Lion Brewing Company and Tribeca Gastro Bar & Grille will be available for purchase at each performance. ABOUT THE BAD NEWS JAZZ & BLUES ORCHESTRA: The Bad News Jazz and Blues Orchestra is a 19 piece “Jump, Jive and Wail” big band that carries on the excitement of the big band era by performing music of contemporary artists such as the Brian Setzer Big Band, Michael Buble`, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Bruno Mars, Flying Neutrinos, Average White Band, Tower of Power and many others. The BNJBO has developed a repertoire that mixes the swing music of the 30s & 40s with the Jump, Jive and Wail music of today. Audience members at one moment may hear the famous Sing, Sing, Sing drum solo of Gene Krupa, followed by a driving arrangement of Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen, Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York and then Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk. Founded in 2012 by Jeff Gavioli, the orchestra emerged after a chance sit-in performance and a subsequent collaboration with local musicians. The group quickly established itself with its first performance at the Florence Music on the Porch Series in 2013 and has since played extensively throughout the Pioneer Valley and beyond! The band is composed of music educators, professional performers, and dedicated hobbyists, contributing to the highly cohesive and energetic sound. The band made their ArtWorks Westfield Downtown Live! Mentone Americana Nights is a free concert series bringing live music to the Shigley Amphitheater on the Moon Lake Campus. On the fourth Saturday of each month from June through September, these family-friendly evenings will be all about good music, good food, and a good reason to come together. Headlining the Saturday, June 28, show is Adamson Avenue, based out of Carrollton, Georgia. The group delivers a mix of folk-country and Americana, led by singer-songwriter Jason Kesler. With Chris Sundling on upright bass, Seth Murphy playing pedal steel guitar, Trey Young on guitar, and Greg Frazier on drums, their sound is honest and melodic, often centered around songs about life, faith, and the moments in between. They’ve built a loyal following for their heartfelt shows and authentic style. Opening the day will be Judy-Nicole Kirby, a Fort Payne-based singer-songwriter with a voice that draws you in and lyrics that make you want to stay. Her pop-folk style blends heartfelt melodies with a touch of soul, and whether she’s playing for a crowd or a handful of folks, she makes it feel personal. Judy is also a visual artist and helps support other local creatives through her work with Boom Town Makers Market. The Average Joes is a North Alabama favorite. Phillip Dooley (Geraldine), Russell Godwin (Grove Oak), and Dennis George (Fyffe) make up the trio with deep roots in local music scene. Their setlist spans from the 1960s to today — rock, country, pop, and bluegrass — all arranged with acoustic instruments and three-part harmonies. Dennis brings a full toolkit, playing everything from mandolin and dobro to harmonica and violin, with harmony vocals shaped by years of shape-note singing. You won’t find a tighter blend. The event starts at 3 p.m., giving you plenty of time to explore the artisan shops and galleries on the Moon Lake Campus and grab a bite at Moon Lake Kitchen, which serves up Cajun and Creole favorites. Locals and visitors alike are invited to spend the evening enjoying what makes Mentone special.
