During their wintering at Fort Clatsop in 1805, Lewis and Clark had time to reflect on what they had achieved thus far on their journey. The primary mission as designed by President Thomas Jefferson was to find the most practical commercial route from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. It was essential that Lewis and Clark establish good relations with the Indians to ensure a successful trade system. They would discover upon their return that most of the tribes above the Platte River were once again at war with one another. Meanwhile the Chinook, the strongest tribe of the lower Columbia, seemed uninterested in engaging the Americans. The Corps of Discovery had not yet encountered the Blackfoot and Crow, the two most powerful and dangerous tribes along the upper Missouri. The captains were discovering that the ancient animosities of the Indian nations died hard and could not be extinguished with a few trinkets and seemingly unrealistic promises of peace and protection from the “Great Father” back east. On this day in 1945, a hero receives the Medal of Honor. Wilburn K. Ross had engaged in a virtual one-man battle against German forces for an unbelievable 5 hours. Amazingly, then-Private Ross lived to receive his Medal in person. Ross had come a long way from the days when he’d ignored his first draft notice. He’d been a Kentucky native living in Virginia, and he’d felt safe ignoring the notice mailed from Kentucky. He joined the Army only when a second message arrived. Who knew that it would be the start of a long and venerable Army career? Ross was deployed to Italy and to Morocco. He was wounded multiple times by shrapnel, even taking hits to his head. On one occasion, he’d been lost behind enemy lines in freezing temps and suffered from half-frozen feet. What a blessing that he’d survived those experiences to be with his company on October 30, 1944. Our soldiers were then in an intense fight with elite German troops near Saint-Jacques, France. Fifty-five of eighty-eight Americans had already been killed or wounded. The rest were cornered. Ross swung into action. He grabbed his machine gun and set up a position ten yards in front of his company. Over the course of the next five hours, he would bear the brunt of nine separate German attacks. “His position seemed to be on fire,” one witness would later say, “because of the explosions all around him.” Several times, Germans would try to creep up on his position and take him out with grenades, but to no avail. After the eighth assault, Ross was out of ammunition, and he was ordered to leave. He refused to go. “He merely shook his head,” Lt. William T. Wardell recounted. The German troops launched a furious assault, trying to take advantage of the situation. Ross’s position was being protected by the eight remaining riflemen from his company. Their only defense was bayonets! Fortunately, someone brought Ross more ammunition just when things were getting critical. Ross was ready. “He opened up as they swarmed him, firing short bursts,” Wardell said. “In less than a minute I saw 50 Germans fall dead or wounded around his machine gun. When the enemy turned and ran, corpses were piled high around the gun.” Ross had broken the German line. Yet again, he refused to leave his post. For a total of 36 hours, he manned the station, making sure that no one came back. He finally left when he felt sure that Americans had secured the position. Amazingly, Private Ross survived the entire incident without injury. Ross returned to Kentucky after the war, where he would briefly serve as a state patrolman. Would you believe that he couldn’t enter into those duties until he’d taken an oath that he had not “fought a duel with deadly weapons within this state nor out of it. . . .”? The state’s Attοrney Gеnеral had to decide whether to accept such an oath from Ross. He did so, opining that fighting off Germans singlehandedly did not constitute a duel. Presumably, everyone was more than happy to receive that opinion. ;) Ross served his state briefly before reenlisting in the Army. He served in the Korean War and later retired as a Master Sergeant. Ross passed away at roughly this time in 2017, mere days before his 95th birthday. RIP, Sgt. DAWN CHOIR: We publish this story in the hope and promise of yet another Easter…When I moved to my new home in South Carolina, it was in January 2021. The cold, rainy, and icy morning weather was quite different than my life in Florida. After arriving safely, my son bought groceries at our neighborhood Dollar General and placed them into a styrofoam container that became my “frig” for two weeks. This was the beginning of everything in America being backordered due to the pandemic! Because I had to meet the movers early the next day, I slept on a blow-up bed in what would be my new bedroom. My dog and I snuggled, knowing that we had an exciting day ahead. And after a wonderful celebratory dinner of a microwaved dinner, a chilled glass of “Rose” and turning my fireplace on with a wall switch, we were ready to sleep! No alarm was needed because at 5:30 a.m. a single Stiletto bird’s voice sang out, welcoming the new morning. As the song dipped and melded into a long oration of melody, I just stayed cozy under the covers enjoying every note! Such a joyful start to my new life. A life I thank God for each day since then because I am once again near my son and his family. The bird’s voice continued to keep me company, starting at the same time each day. But two weeks later, I awoke with Covid! And any of you who have had it know the isolation felt with the diagnosis and also the fear! As each day tumbled into the next, I thanked this lovely bird for his presence each morning during a very lonely time. His song was one of hope. Almost four years have passed since that first early morning serenade and guess what? Yes, that bird still wakes me even before Alexa, and he reminds me that he is there. Truly a comfort and a blessing. My friend Sara and I recently spent a day together. In our conversation, she taught me about a daily occurrence around the world called, “Dawn Chorus.” “Yes, I exclaimed hugging her, knowing that I too had had this experience! Thinking about that, I know my bird is a part of God’s earthly choir around this tired old world. An exciting event every 24 hours that never skips a beat. In other words, one of those “givens” in life. Imagine all the birds on earth singing at the same time welcoming a new day. Wow! So tomorrow, keep your window open and enjoy the “Dawn Chorus” in your life. And a big “shout out” to my bird! I pray he has a long life and knows I thank him every day.
