UPDATE: We just found out she’s going to need two blood transfusions and a plasma transfusion. She’s not stable enough for surgery yet. Tonight alone will cost $5,000. The estimated cost for surgery this weekend, including everything required in the ICU, is another $10,000—on top of the $5,000 already incurred—bringing the total to $15,000 to save her life. The ultrasound revealed she may have a retained uterus or possibly a blood clot—they aren’t yet able to confirm. What they do know is that the bleeding hasn’t stopped. Her body isn’t clotting naturally, so they are also treating her with high doses of vitamin K in case she ingested rat poison. No matter what she needs, we’re all in to help her. UPDATE: Mama is barely alive, lethargic pale, tail crusted with blood but thank God the sheriff was able to get her to us safely. She's going into the vet now. Mama also has severe bruising on chest. Her puppies toes were bit off 12 to 24 hours ago. She needs blood transfusions and is headed now to the emergency vet. We need her to be ok. We need to show her not all humans are like this. And that we love her and her life matters too. Keep fighting little beauty. Don't give up. We will protect you now. Just keep fighting. 911 URGENT HELP NEEDED Mom. Dad. 7 Newborn Puppies. None of this makes sense and its horrific to even believe —please read, donate, share, and pray. We were told there were two stray dogs found with brand new puppies. Animal control contacted us asking for help. But then the story changed. Suddenly, they claimed the puppies already had homes—only the mom and dad “needed gone.” None of it added up. We kept asking questions. And today, the truth arrived at our doorstep. A woman showed up at our shelter. In her hands: a laundry basket with 7 newborn puppies, no more than a few days old. She said she couldn't care for them. Said they were “strays.” But then said her 3-year-old toddler bit the paw off one of the puppies’ back legs. Then she said “I am going to shoot the mom. She’s hemorrhaging at home.” We called Animal Control immediately. They are en route to the house right now to retrieve both the mom and the dad. A deputy is being dispatched. The mom will be rushed to the vet next. The 7 tiny babies are already on their way to receive emergency medical care. Our hearts are shaken - but we are focused. Times are undeniably tough, and we’ve encountered significant challenges in nurturing the health and well being of all the animals in our care. Yet, amidst the struggles, there are moments of hope that lift our spirits. When we hear a story like the one we’re about to share, we simply can’t turn away; it’s not an option for us 😢🐾 With heavy hearts, we introduce a new member of our family who is currently on a journey from Chania to Piraeus. His path has been filled with unimaginable hardship, having been tragically struck by a vehicle. However, thanks to the kindness of compassionate individuals, he has been granted a second chance at life. This sweet boy bears a striking resemblance to our beloved Fidel, another resilient soul from Chania who has endured his own trials. Their stories tug at our heartstrings, reminding us of the pain they both have faced. Our foremost priority now is ensuring he receives expert care from a neurological veterinarian. With the right support, there is hope that he may regain the ability to walk, despite the severe spinal condition he is battling, which includes a comminuted fracture of the intervertebral disc. Additionally, swelling along his spine is affecting the movement of his front legs, but we believe that with cortisone treatment, there is a chance for improvement. For the time being, our main focus is to keep him comfortable and as still as possible to avoid any further complications. We are dedicated to managing his existing pressure sores and attending carefully to emptying his bladder and intestines to prevent infections.l 🏥 The similarities between his journey and that of dear Fidel resonate deeply within us. Preliminary tests have been conducted, and we are currently coordinating with another veterinary clinic. In about ten days, we expect to perform an MRI, a vital step in understanding his condition. Unfortunately, this crucial test comes with a considerable financial burden, and we find ourselves reaching out for your support as we navigate this challenging path. We are wholly committed to providing him with the love and care he truly deserves. However, the scans and tests will incur significant costs, along with the need for specialised pads, nutritious food, medication, and vitamins to strengthen his immune system. SWIPE FOR BEFORE/AFTER: True to his name, Rockstar overcomes his rough past as a suspected dogfighting victim 🧡 Last August, at the request of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division - SLED, the ASPCA assisted with the removal of a group of dogs from a property in South Carolina. Suspected to have been used for dogfighting, the dogs were transported to the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center (CRC) in Columbus, Ohio, to receive much-needed medical and behavioral care. Amongst them was a shy pup named Rockstar 🌟 Albeit fearful of his environment and walking on a leash, Rockstar stood out for being a calm and gentle boy from the start. In fact, he loved people and other dogs so much that those became his biggest motivators for working through his fear! Soon enough, Rockstar became comfortable on a leash and exploring new places. He was so good with other pups that he even became a helper dog, where his job was to help bring out the playful side of more fearful or shut-down dogs. After a lifetime of being chained up, Rockstar made leaps and bounds with our staff at the CRC, and all that was left was to find him his paw-fect adopter. Shortly after moving out of her childhood home, Hope S. was at the CRC looking for a new companion. She met Rockstar and immediately had a strong connection with him. There are some misconceptions surrounding dogfighting victims, and, like with all our adoptables, our staff thoroughly explained Rockstar's background to Hope. She was not concerned and brought him home that very same day! Although he was anxious that first week, Hope did all she could to make him feel welcome. Now, Rockstar is settled into his first-ever loving home and is showing off his personality quirks more and more. Hope has started running with Rockstar and is working on training with him, which she loves to do! Hope notes, "[Rockstar] doesn't have an angry bone in his body, he's just a happy little boy. “Is that blood?” I whispered, my stomach flipping several times. While I didn’t like to think myself a coward, I was practical, and it didn’t exactly take genius survival instincts to know that going in the opposite direction of danger was probably a good idea. Although, what if somebody needed help? It wasn’t entirely unheard of for someone to get hurt in the woods and need assistance, and no one would have committed a crime this close to the road. Right? “Hello?” I called cautiously, pulling my phone out just in case. I liked to think I could handle myself in a lot of situations, but there was no need to be cocky. I also unlocked it and made sure I dialed the 9 and the 1. Maybe that was a bit paranoid, but I preferred to think of it as prepared. After all, while I was only half-white, I was definitely doing the thing in horror movies where Caucasian women inexplicably went toward the danger instead of away from it. But I couldn’t, with a clean conscience, leave someone if they were alone and hurt. “Is someone here? I can help! Make a sound to let me know where you are!” I paused, waiting to see if anyone responded. It certainly would have made me feel better if they did, because all sorts of thoughts about possibly finding a body or even parts of a body floated through my head. It was a lot of blood. I was pretty sure that if the blood did come from a human then they were already dead. I should probably just call the authorities…but then the thought of being wrong and wasting a bunch of time made me think otherwise. We were far enough out that it would take at least thirty minutes for cops to respond from the city, and in that time, if someone was hurt... well, it wouldn’t bode well for them. So, I kept going, dread building in my stomach. I wasn’t sure exactly what I expected to find, but it certainly wasn’t to step through a thick line of foliage only to find a giant wolf lying on the ground, its back pressed up against a rotted stump for protection. “Oh, my God!” I cried, leaping back. The wolf didn’t so much as lift its head. With my heart thundering in my chest, I realized the blood trail I’d been following came from this animal. Specifically from the gaping wound on its side. “You poor thing. That has to hurt.” Now, I wasn’t some idiot who thought I was a Disney princess, so I didn’t get any closer. Injured animals were often the most dangerous, and this wolf was pretty injured—life-threateningly so. In fact, I was probably in danger by being this close to it. And yet I couldn’t bring myself to step away. There was something so inherently tragic about seeing such a majestic creature struggling to breathe, no light in its eyes. Wild animals were incredibly resilient, so it likely only needed the tiniest bit of help to push it away from the brink of death. The most obvious way to do that was to stop the blood flowing sluggishly from its wound. No. No. I cut that thought off immediately. It would be the worst idea to try to help a wounded, wild animal all on my own in the middle of the woods. I’d have to be crazy! I knew that, and I told myself so with all the sternness I could muster. It wasn’t happening. I was going to turn around and— Oh, who was I kidding? I wanted to help the wolf. Well, if I was going to be lethally dumb, then I’d try to do it as carefully as I could. Setting my pack on the ground, I pulled out the bowl I ate my cereal out of at work, then tipped the contents of my water bottle into it. Hopefully, it would help a little. I put it on the ground and used a stick to push it closer to the wolf’s head. It wasn’t easy, and plenty of water sloshed over the side, but at least I kept my distance.

But it’s the ground dwelling animals that naturally struggle the most with the flooding of burrow homes, a death sentence for animals like wombats. Today’s intakes 4 x 9 week old babies found in a skip bin this afternoon This is rescue unfortunately. This is what we deal with on a daily basis. They are so very lucky that they were found by some kindhearted workers, who were able to catch them and contacted us immediately for help. We are technically at capacity…we don’t have enough foster carers and our finances are absolutely stretched to the limit…but how do you say no to these 4 precious little souls? You just can’t. It’s not within our bones. We were put on this planet to save lives. Kittens. At any hour of the day. We raced off to collect them and we’re so glad we did as they were in even worse shape than what we thought We dropped everything. Every second counts in this situations. They are skeletal…not an ounce of body fat on them…they are dehydrated, anaemic and have symptoms of flu…they really wouldn’t have lasted much longer Please keep them in your thoughts and those of our dedicated volunteer team who are doing everything they can to get them healthy and well We don’t plan on situations like these. As you can imagine costs build and quickly. It's rescue, things happen when you least expect but we need to do what is right. For the animals. The costs will run into the thousands.
