“Braille gives me another flexible tool to help navigate life as a blind person.”
After an accident, Sarah Matthews lost her sight. She was also left with chronic pain and reduced mobility from her injuries.
Sarah was signposted to a braille class at the Adult Learning Centre.
“Braille was a nice change of pace,” she says. “I needed assistance with pretty much everything at that point, so I was quite taken by the independence of it.”
Now, Sarah uses braille every day to manage her health needs. “I use braille for important letters that come through, like medical appointments,” she explains. “I’ll type out a line at the top that says the date, time and what the appointment is in braille. Then, when I get to the appointments, I can get hold of the right piece of paper very easily.”
Braille support and resources are key elements in how we help blind and partially sighted people navigate their world with confidence.
