A volte, le storie più incredibili nascono dalle più grandi tragedie. Immaginate un cucciolo di ippopotamo, Owen, che si ritrova improvvisamente solo al mondo, spazzato via dalla furia di uno tsunami. Soccorso e portato in un parco faunistico, il piccolo era traumatizzato e disorientato. Aveva bisogno di una guida, di una figura materna che potesse dargli conforto. Ma chi avrebbe mai potuto ricoprire quel ruolo? Tra tutti gli animali presenti, Owen non scelse un suo simile. I suoi occhi si posarono su una creatura lenta, antica e completamente diversa da lui. Si avvicinò e si accoccolò accanto a Mzee, una tartaruga gigante di 130 anni. Contro ogni previsione, Owen aveva scelto la sua nuova madre. Per mesi, il piccolo ippopotamo non si è mai separato dalla sua compagna rettile. Mangiavano insieme, dormivano vicini e nuotavano fianco a fianco. Owen seguiva Mzee ovunque, cercando in quel guscio antico e solido la sicurezza che aveva perduto. Questa non è solo la storia di un'amicizia insolita. È la prova che il bisogno di affetto e di legame può superare qualsiasi barriera, persino quella tra specie così diverse. Un cucciolo di mammifero e un rettile centenario ci hanno mostrato cosa significhi veramente trovare una famiglia.

This World Wildlife Day 2025, we celebrated the beauty of biodiversity through two impactful events! 💚 In Ligao City, Albay, we joined hands with the DENR Region V, Albay Veterinary Office, and the Albay Park and Wildlife to release five Philippine Serpent Eagles (Spilornis holospilus) back into the wild and plant trees at Mt. Masaraga Forest Reserve. The celebration continued at Albay Park and Wildlife in Bogtong, Legazpi City, where we emphasized the importance of conservation and community action. Meanwhile, in Ormoc City, Leyte, young minds from Brgy. Gaas Integrated School expressed their passion for wildlife protection through an inspiring poster-making contest, proving that the future of conservation is bright in their hands.
