Efficient thriving
Water didn’t always come from a tap. Sometimes it came from the ground, too! Households used to draw water from wells for their daily needs.
A severe drought hit Singapore in 1963, leading to our longest water rationing period in history. Water access had to be cut for 6 hours a day, 4 times a week. Residents used to have to worry about whether there was enough water to drink and to bathe. This lasted about nine months until the Public Utilities Board (PUB), formed in May 1963, lifted restrictions in February 1964.
Fears of another dry spell in 1971 led to a “Water is Precious” campaign aimed at reducing water consumption, staving off water rationing.
Today, while we enjoy a steady supply of clean water thanks to our Four National Taps – Local Catchment, Imported Water, Desalinated Water, and NEWater – it is still important to conserve water.
This month as we mark Singapore World Water Day, let’s renew our commitment to water conservation. Whether it’s practising water-saving habits at home, adopting water-efficient practices in organisations, or coming together to organise ground-up initiatives for our community, we must work together to conserve this precious resource!
