The wait is finally over! The epic saga of Shaka iLembe returned for an explosive second season on 15 June at 20:00 CAT, exclusively on Mzansi Magic. Fans who were captivated by the first season’s breathtaking storytelling and cinematic brilliance are in for an even more thrilling ride as the drama intensifies. 🎥
AFDA alumnus Lemogang Tsipa reprises his powerful role as the legendary Shaka, bringing depth and intensity to the character’s growing legend. Joining the cast this season is fellow AFDA alumna Luyanda Zuma, who stars as Liyana, a spirited and independent maiden serving under Queen Mother Mthaniya. 👑
“I manifested myself into the cast,” Luyanda revealed. “I religiously watched interviews of the show. The casting process was gruelling, I went through seven callbacks. Bomb is very rigorous and thorough.” Thrown into a scene opposite Nomzamo Mbatha, Luyanda admitted feeling intimidated at first but quickly found her footing. “Nomzamo was welcoming and made the experience a breeze,” she said.
Liyana’s quick wit and bold presence make her a standout character, drawing the attention of both Shaka and Nandi, entangling her in a storyline that will reshape her destiny. 🎞
Season 2 of Shaka iLembe sets the stage with precision, establishing conflict, introducing new characters and tensions, and diving deeper into Shaka’s personal and political burdens. The stakes are higher, the storytelling more intense, and the visual grandeur more compelling than ever.
At the 2024 SAFTAs, the excellence of AFDA alumni behind the scenes was also recognised. Zeno Peterson won two major awards; Best Achievement in Cinematography and Best Achievement in Directing for Shaka iLembe. He shared the directing award with fellow alumnus Adze Ugah, while Thishiwe Ziqubu took home the SAFTA for Best Achievement in Scriptwriting. ✍
