— Saint William of Vercelli "He climbed mountains to find God—and gained a wolf for a friend." 🗓️ 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧: c. 1085 📍 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡: Vercelli, Italy ✝️ 𝐃𝐢𝐞𝐝: June 25, 1142 🌟 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲: June 25 🕊️ 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐬: Benedictine habit, mountain hermitage, wolf companion, star, staff 🙏 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞: Montevergine region, hermits, pilgrims 📖 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐚: 𝐇𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲. Born in northern Italy, William vowed from a young age to live a life of penance and pilgrimage. After walking barefoot to Santiago de Compostela, he withdrew to a wild mountain where he built a hermitage. Though he craved solitude, others were drawn to his holiness—and so a community was born. 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐞. Legends say that a wild wolf had killed the donkey William used for building. Rather than curse it, he tamed the beast and made it carry his load. This act stunned onlookers and revealed William’s deep peace with creation—just like Saint Hervé, whom we recently featured, and who also befriended a wolf after losing his guide. Both men show us that holiness can tame even what seems wild. 𝐇𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞. William established the Congregation of Monte Vergine, merging Benedictine stability with hermitic passion. His monks embraced silence, fasting, and obedience—yet always centered on Christ’s mercy. His legacy endures in the still-active sanctuary he built on the mountain.
