#Torture destroys lives. #Rehabilitation rebuilds them. As we honour the resilience and inspiration of #torture survivors around the world this #26June, the stories of Keiry Movilla Salazar, Giovanny García Garrido, Andrés Juan Guerrero Rubiano, and Juan Pablo Fonseca Roa bear witness to the power of #HumanRights and those who work to achieve them. All four young Colombian protesters were shot in their eyes and left blinded in a deliberate campaign of #PoliceBrutality perpetrated for years under the former government. All four had life projects that were shattered in an instant. They met each other, and many other young people with the same life-changing injuries, at IRCT's member centre in Bogota, the Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) (👉 https://www.caps.org.co/ ) led by the brilliant Angela Ospina Rincón. Under the care of psychologists and social workers at CAPS, Keiry, Giovanny, Andrés and Juan Pablo rediscovered their strength and purpose, establishing a social movement, MOCAO, that is succeeding in its campaign to end #PoliceBrutality in #Colombia and to bring #healing and #justice to all victims of #torture and other ill-treatment. As Keiry puts it, from #torture came 'resistance, love, and struggle': "I would tell people who have suffered eye injuries, that this is a rebirth. That life has given us an opportunity to keep fighting, to keep showing why we are here today." It's a message of hope and light that feels essential in today's dark and tumultuous world. And it is one that Keiry, Giovanny, Andrés and Juan Pablo were able to deliver to an audience of some of the world's most influential story-tellers gathered in #Tiblisi #Georgia for the ZEG Storytelling Festival.
