infestation

If your Monarda or similar flowers aren't looking their best, and the plant is overall healthy, you may have budworms. Monarda flowers should look full with many tubular flowers surrounding the bud. If you are noticing large gaps in the flower, or very little flowering, look for this culprit: budworms! We always try mechanical removal first for any pests we can. So, armed with tweezers and my glasses (old age lol), I go to each and every plant and remove them one by one. Takes about 20 minutes. I repeat this every couple of days, and every year, they are gone within a week or so. If the infestation is heavy, you may consider simply cutting off any existing flower heads and burn them or bury them. Check to see if new buds are forming below that head, and cut right above there (pic attached). I usually have to cut a few heads, not too many, however the rest of the flowers always recover and new buds are appear on mine all up and down the plant stem. NOW BOOKING LATE-2025 PROJECTS!
