This production highlights physical storytelling and a profound engagement with Shakespeare’s language, offering a deeply visceral and innovative theatrical experience. Casting Notes Gender: All male characters MUST be portrayed by female presenting actors. Female characters are open to trans and gender-diverse actors as well as cisgender women. Race: This adaptation of Othello shifts the focus from race to the broader concept of “otherhood.” We are seeking actors who can authentically convey the feeling of being the outcast, regardless of their racial or ethnic background. The essence lies in the actor’s ability to embody and express the profound sense of alienation and marginalisation that defines Othello’s character. Theme: As the play delves deeply into themes of domestic violence, it is crucial that actors approach the material with sensitivity, understanding, and the ability to engage with these heavy themes responsibly. Physicality and Language: This production is highly movement-based, requiring actors with strong physical theatre skills and an excellent grasp of Shakespearean language. A strong command of both is essential to bring the dynamic nature of this adaptation to life.
