“Cranky, Comfy, and Counting Down 🐐❄️” There’s a chill in the Texas air, and at Whey Cool Ranch, that means two things: getting ready for the cold snap and anxiously watching over our expecting mamas. While Texas winters might feel mild to some, January has a way of surprising us with single-digit temps and a bitter wind straight out of the Arctic. And wouldn’t you know it, that’s exactly when my two best senior does—Lady and Dulce—are due! Thankfully, both girls are tucked away in cozy maternity pens with six inches of soft, warm bedding and all the alfalfa they can dream of. Lady, however, has made it abundantly clear that she’s done. She’s cranky, itchy, and utterly over being pregnant. I spent some time brushing her today with a soft brush to soothe her itchiness. She seemed to appreciate it—until I made the mistake of brushing her hips. One glare and a firm headbutt to my hand later, I got the message loud and clear. Usually, Lady is our sweetest, most patient doe, but even she has her limits. With the weather shift, there’s a good chance labor could start tonight, so I’ll be setting my alarm every two hours to check on her. Here’s hoping her little miracles decide to arrive soon because this mama (and her human caretaker!) are both ready for the next chapter.
