Този нулев момент, тази нулева секунда, когато все още няма нищо, но може да се случи всичко. В двореца Гвалиор в Махаращра, в един миниатюрен, почти невзрачен храм ще откриете най-старото в света изписване на символа нула върху камък – във формата на кръг. За вас този кръг може да означава дупка – празнота, нищо. В древна Индия обаче кръглата форма е символ на безкрайния цикъл на живота. Идеята, че нищото всъщност е нещо, има дълбоки корени в индуистката митология. (Все пак от Индия тръгва идеята за нирвана – състояние на нищо, без тревоги и желания.) Странно ли е тогава, че макар понятието за нула да съществува и преди времето на индийския астроном и математик Брахмагупта, той първи дефинира нулата и започва да я използва пълноправно в аритметични операции? Днес започваме една нова година на чисто, от нула. Нула с безброй обещания, мечти, пожелания, надежди. Така че нека започне обратното броене – четири, три, две, едно… ЧЕСТИТА НОВА ГОДИНА! FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE, ZERO I love this moment of expectation, when you are at the threshold of something new. This zero moment, this zero second, when there is nothing yet, but everything can happen. In the castle of Gwalior in Maharashtra there is a tiny, almost unnoticeable temple where you will find the oldest occurrence of the symbol zero engraved in stone – in the form of a circle. Maybe for you this circle symbolizes a hole – nothing, a void. In ancient India, though, the shape of a circle represented the eternal circle of life. The idea that nothing can actually be something has deep roots in Hindu mythology. (It was from India after all that the idea about Nirvana sprang up – a state of nothingness, no worries or desires.) Is it strange then that even though the notion of zero existed before the time of the Indian astronomer and mathematician Brahmagupta, it was he who defined zero and started using it as a full-fledged digit in arithmetical operations? It’s the beginning of another year – we can start afresh, start from zero. Zero with an endless number of promises, dreams, wishes, hopes. So, let the countdown begin – four, three, two, one… HAPPY NEW YEAR!
