𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕸𝖊𝖘𝖘𝖊𝖗 A popular design of the 15th and 16th century, the messer was a single edged, bladed weapon in the sword size category but of the knife construction stye. Messers were typically single handed swords used for self-defense, or military applications. Messers are distinct from other short swords of the era in that the tang of the sword is held between two pinned grip plates, with a crossguard above. This cross guard often featured the Nagel or Nail, a third protrusion perpendicular to the cross which covers the knuckles of the wielder. crossguards often dropped one side down in line with the blade to better protect the fingers as well. The messer may have been an early evolution of what would later turn into the more involved hand protections of sabers and rapiers. Since the Hilt construction was atypical of other swords, the pommels were often asymmetrical and curved toward the edged side, terminating in a ‘bird’s beak’ The Messer appears to have evolved in late medieval Bavaria, where the design became popular and spread across Europe, especially among mercenary armies Today, the Messer has seen a large resurgence in popularity among those in the HEMA crowd for one handed fencing as it is shown extensively in the surviving combat manuals of the time period, especially the works of Meyer.
