Maruyama Kannonji - The Temple of the Japanese Rice Fish
Maruyama Kannonji is a temple located in Nogata City, in the northern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. Over 15 years ago, the temple was given several dozen "medaka" (Japanese rice fish), which have now grown into more than 1,000 fish of 60 different varieties. Medaka can be spotted throughout the temple grounds from spring through autumn.
The temple is also famous for its "goshuin" (temple stamp certificates) with hand-drawn illustrations of medaka that change every month. There are also goshuin featuring the portrait of a beautiful woman, with the kimono cut out so that the background scenery becomes the kimono pattern. Visitors can enjoy holding the goshuin up over the temple’s stunning seasonal greenery!
