Many people believe that chronic stress or overwhelm is the result of negative thinking or just typical "Type A" personality type. They think adjusting your mindset, high fiving yourself in the mirror, or having better work/life balance is all that's needed to solve it. But after helping hundreds of clients over the past 20 years with this issue, let me clear the confusion and shed some light on what's actually going on here... First: Nervous system overdrive isn't an issue of mindset. The "fight or flight" function is part of the autonomic nervous system... Just like digestion, heart rate, and other physical functions. You can't simply "out reason" overwhelm. Information alone is NOT transformation. Lasting change happens with brain based strategies.. and it’s a whole lot easier than playing “whack a mole” with racing thoughts, and wasting precious time trying to “should” yourself into feeling better. Second: Stress doesn't always indicate someone is lacking faith. Just like many other physical symptoms can exist in the body, "fight or flight" can be stuck in the "ON" position... even in those who have a strong faith and are making sound decisions in life. Of course, with cancer, a cavity, or any other health issue, we wouldn't blame a person's lack of faith, right? The same is true with nervous system dysregulation. It can happen even in people with a strong faith. Third: Patterns of chronic stress are memorized in the nervous system. They can be unmemorized as well. Neuroplasticity offers us all a chance to rewire, and it happens in as little as 15 minutes a day with the right strategies. As a clinical therapist for the past 20 years, and now someone who has developed a simpler 3-step approach, I can say that it’s not necessary to spend years stuck in the same emotional groundhog day. And that it's not necessary keep going back into the past in order to be set free in the present.
