Born into slavery in Maryland around 1820, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in 1849 and became the most famous "conductor" of the Underground Railroad, leading hundreds to safety. Known as "Moses," she later served as a spy, scout, and nurse in the Civil War and fought for women’s suffrage in her later years.
