Engaging shift
It is deeply concerning when credit union employees fail to understand how Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) align with the strategic direction of their organization. For example, many struggle to grasp the concept of financial inclusion and even question why and how account opening is free 🆓 at AMACCUL. While this lack of understanding may reflect broader issues of mission drift and ignorance, it also highlights the need for a renewed focus on the true purpose of credit unions.
At AMACCUL, we remain steadfast in our commitment to offering services that directly address the needs of the unbanked. We are proud to provide a platform where account opening is free, with no monthly charges, no deposit fees, and no withdrawal fees. Our mission is clear: to ensure everyone has access to essential financial services, such as savings and loans, which are key to improving livelihoods and fostering financial independence. We take great pride in seeing the unbanked become bankable.
However, it is disheartening to witness the shift within the broader credit union sector, where political maneuvering and profit-driven motives have taken precedence over outreach, social impact, and sustainability. The cooperative spirit that should define credit unions is increasingly overshadowed by competition, with some staff members even engaging in conflicts over membership. This is a troubling development for an institution that was founded on principles of collaboration and community support, not rivalry.
The unfortunate reality of bribery and corruption has also infiltrated the credit union movement. In some cases, politicians are spending millions to secure board positions, only to exploit these roles for personal gain, including receiving substantial bribes during staff recruitment processes. This is a sad reflection of how far the sector has strayed from its foundational mission.
At AMACCUL, we stand firmly against these practices. We remain dedicated to reviving the true essence of the credit union movement, one that prioritizes social impact, sustainability, and cooperative values. Our focus will always be on providing accessible, affordable financial services that empower individuals and communities—free from political interference and profit-driven agendas. The credit union movement must return to its roots and work toward the collective good, as it was always meant to.
