Literary Legends: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Imagine a summer so dark it feels like the world itself is unravelling… The year was 1816, and Europe was trapped in the eerie aftermath of Mount Tambora’s volcanic eruption. A massive ash cloud veiled the sun, temperatures plummeted, and rain fell relentlessly. Amid this apocalyptic gloom, a group of scandalous young writers sought refuge at Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley née Godwin and John Polidori arrived with dreams of sunny boating trips and countryside picnics, but the weather had other plans. Trapped indoors, the group turned to storytelling. Late at night, by flickering candlelight, they read ghost stories, argued about science and mortality, and let their imaginations run wild. Then, one fateful evening, Byron issued a dare: write a story more terrifying than any we’ve heard before. For Mary, just 18 years old, inspiration struck like a bolt of lightning. She envisioned a scientist defying nature, reanimating lifeless flesh, and unleashing a monstrous creation doomed to haunt him forever. That vivid idea became Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus—a groundbreaking 1818 novel that forever transformed Gothic horror and science fiction. 📷 @emmalewisphotographer #Frankenstein #MaryShelley #YearWithoutASummer #LiteraryLegends #GothicHorror #ScienceFiction #Bookstagram Have you read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley? A First Look at the Mad Scientist's Domain: Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein! Acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro is adapting Mary Shelley's legendary gothic novel Frankenstein for Netflix, and the first sneak peek offers a chilling look into the mind of the infamous mad scientist. Del Toro shared with Vanity Fair, "Gothic romance was born partially out of the fascination with ruins," suggesting the film's visual aesthetic. "Sometimes they’re more beautiful than the building complete because it’s the clash of creation and destruction." A newly revealed image from the set offers a haunting view of Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory, a space where life and death blur together. The gothic architecture and eerie lighting create the perfect backdrop for a dark, unsettling tale. Jacob Elordi, best known for Euphoria and The Kissing Booth, will bring the iconic monster to life, joined by an impressive cast that includes Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Oscar Isaac. Horror film veteran Ralph Ineson, recognized for his roles in The Witch and The First Omen, will also make a significant cameo. Del Toro’s adaptation promises to be a visually captivating and distinct take on Shelley’s timeless story. Known for his gothic style and creative storytelling, del Toro has long expressed a desire to bring Frankenstein to the screen. "The best moments in my mind of Frankenstein, of the novel, are yet to be filmed," he remarked back in 2008. Now that production is complete, audiences can expect an unforgettable cinematic experience.
