Fresh commissioner
The flood situation in Odisha’s Kendrapara district has turned grim, with nearly 30 villages in Rajnagar block cut off due to the swelling Brahmani river.
For four consecutive days, rising waters have inundated large areas of Pattamundai and Aul blocks, pushing thousands into crisis. In low-lying villages, water has entered homes, schools, and health centres, leaving residents stranded without food, clean water, or basic sanitation.
Many are forced to stay on elevated spots with their livestock, fearing crocodile attacks at night, which are common in this delta region. Drinking water sources have been submerged, worsening the health risks.
Despite residents alleging delays in relief efforts, local authorities claim they are in regular contact with the Special Relief Commissioner and that aid is on the way.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has warned of a fresh low-pressure system developing over the north Bay of Bengal around July 24, which could bring heavy rains and further worsen the flood situation in coastal and northern Odisha.
