Antique Chinese Sculpture of a Man Carrying Wood ? Tang Dynasty Style ? Terracotta NEEDS REPAIR - $200.00 I honestly don't know where this object originated, or what it's made of. I purchased him at an estate sale auction in Northeast Wisconsin. The estate sale contained many high end antiques from all over the world, but many of them were of Chinese origin. One pair of Chinese vases in that auction sold for $15,000. That being said, according to my Google AI photo search: "This is likely a Chinese Tang Dynasty terracotta or wood statue of a person carrying firewood. The style suggests a possible origin from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) or a later piece in that style. These figures, known as mingqi, were often placed in tombs to accompany and entertain the deceased in the afterlife. " Based on the texture and characteristics of the figure, I believe this piece is made from terracotta or a similar material. I find NO markings or signatures. He is very heavy - nearly 4 lbs without packaging, and stands about 14.5" tall x 6" wide x 4" deep. He is in very fragile condition and in need of professional repair. There are several broken tips off the firewood he is carrying, it looks as though there is an old repair on his right arm (the one carrying the wood - see red arrows). His head is broken, but there is a longer piece of terracotta that goes down into the hollow body that keeps it from completely falling off. There are some other areas of cracking or chipping as well. A beautiful piece for the right buyer / collector to have professionally repaired. I will double box package him with great care and extra padding to prevent any further damage during shipping. Please ask questions before buying, as I want to make sure the buyer is not disappointed with their purchase. Though I don't know much about this figure, I will do my best to answer any questions, or take more photos / close ups upon request.
