THE SPLENDOUR OF SPORTS IS BACK IN EBONYI STATE Yesterday, Ebonyi State’s 7-month-old football team, Abakaliki FC, defeated Ikorodu City FC in the 2025 President's Federation Cup semi-final game in Abuja. Consequently, they are through to the finals and set to lock horns against the almighty Kwara United FC in the final match of the coveted Cup. Leading up to the semi-finals, Abakaliki Football Club knocked out top teams of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) like Katsina United, Nasarawa United, Enyimba International, and now, Ikorodu City Football Club. Congratulations and well done to the boys. These feats are rooted in the beautiful dynamics of the game and, importantly, in the support, management, and passion for sports development by the Government of Ebonyi State. The Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has never been shy about his desire to engineer the unity and development of Ebonyi youths through sports. From his time as a legislator, he always marked such passion with his consistency in sponsoring sporting activities for his people, the Izzi Football competition. Today, his tracks in sports development have continued on a larger scale. As Governor, he created the Abakaliki football club, codenamed De Rice Boys. In less than a year, the team has become a revelation to the Nation. Practically, he takes good care of the team, ensures their allowances are paid as and when due. He gave them a brand-new bus which comfortably commutes them around the country and, importantly, employed capable hands in the management circle. The Governor equally ensures that Ebonyi State is well represented in National Sporting activities. Currently, the Ebonyi State contingents in Ogun are doing great things. These are some of the practical implementation results of the tenets enshrined in the People’s Charter of Needs agenda of the present Government. They have shown the effectiveness of the People’s Charter of Needs’ processes entrusted to Governor Nwifuru by the Ebonyi people. These are baby steps, yes, and there is room for more to be done. But crucially, the Governor is ensuring proper growth in infrastructure, talent identification and training, funding, participation, and overall promotion of sports in Ebonyi State.
