Meet Anne, our Malawi partner whose story sounds like it should be the next @Netflix documentary. Raising nine children without electricity or running water didn’t stop Anne’s parents from championing education. Anne excelled in her studies, even though her school was conducted outside- a building wasn’t affordable, so classes were held under a tree for shade. By the time Anne was in high school, she was given the extraordinary opportunity to study abroad in the US. Sponsored by a woman named Donna, who saw Anne’s potential, she built momentum. Anne became both valedictorian and homecoming queen, and then went on to university. She excelled all the way through medical school, though she briefly faltered when she got to the robotics training in her course- without electricity, Anne had never played a videogame so she hadn’t developed the fine motor skills of her peers. Anne worked twice as hard until she was number one in her robotics class and kept going. After graduating from medical school, she became a double board certified gynecologic oncologist. Then she went on to found the program we’ve partnered with in Malawi. With your help, 124 orphans in Malawi have a home and care. 400 children are receiving an education at one of the best primary schools in the country. The primary school has churned out 100% pass rates for years sending graduates onto secondary school. This is a huge accomplishment when only about 16% of the population makes it to secondary school. The on-site medical clinic helps 30,000 people per year and has greatly reduced the number of maternal deaths in the country. Anne, thanks for inspiring us all towards momentum.
