"The price of everything is going up. I just can't afford all the things my daughter needs for school." Rachel, Ava’s mum. Life changed suddenly for Ava’s family after her parents separated. The family went from “making do” to struggling to get by. This was made even harder by rising living costs. Rachel wants a brighter future for her and Ava – she’s working hard at her job at the local café while also studying to become a teacher. And to help make ends meet, Rachel and Ava moved out of town, further away from Ava’s school, to find housing they could more easily afford. But for now, Rachel can’t cover the costs of Ava’s school essentials - basics like uniforms or school shoes. And Ava hasn’t been able to attend school excursions or extra-curricular activities due to cost. While Rachel does her best to balance her commitments, she has little time to help Ava with her schoolwork. Ava is independent and determined, but falling behind in maths and reading has left her feeling worried about starting Year 3 this year. The recent changes in her life haven’t helped. Despite trying her hardest, without the school essentials she needs, and her mum only having limited to time to help with her homework - she’s struggling to keep up. Every child deserves the chance to succeed – no matter their circumstances.
