hypothermia
As a winter storm approaches, bringing snow, sleet, and freezing rain to our area, it’s crucial to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, especially when using generators and alternative heating sources during potential power outages.
Understanding Carbon Monoxide:
• What is CO? A colorless, odorless gas produced by burning fuels like gas, wood, coal, or propane.
• Why is it dangerous? CO can build up indoors and become fatal within minutes.
Safety Tips During the Storm:
• Never use generators indoors: Always operate generators outside, away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent CO buildup.
• Avoid using outdoor appliances inside: Grills, camp stoves, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices should only be used outdoors.
• Install CO detectors: Ensure your home has working carbon monoxide detectors on every level, especially near sleeping areas. Test them regularly.
• Ventilate properly: Keep vents and flues free of debris. Ensure that your heating systems are in good working order and have been inspected annually.
Recognize the Symptoms of CO Poisoning:
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Weakness
• Nausea or vomiting
• Chest pain
• Confusion
If you suspect CO poisoning, move to fresh air immediately and call 911.
Stay safe and warm during the upcoming storm, and always prioritize proper ventilation and safety measures when using alternative heating sources.
