Prominent defined
In the late 19th century, Samuel Palmer and Henry Dresser each made their way south in search of opportunity, eventually building the elegant townhomes that would become the Bellwether House.
Palmer, a Rhode Island native with Mayflower roots, helped run one of Savannah’s most prominent hardware stores—Palmer and Sons—while living in the left side of the home with his family for generations.
Next door, Dresser—originally from coastal Massachusetts and descended from the founders of Salem and Boston—arrived in Savannah after the Civil War to become a cotton factor, investing in the region’s agricultural revival. Though his time in the city was brief, his impact remains.
Today, their legacy lives on in Bellwether House, a stunning boutique hotel and proud member of Historic Hotels of America. Rich in history and Southern charm, it continues to welcome guests with the same warmth and elegance that’s defined it for over a century.
