SAVE FOR LATER! If there was only one piece of advice I’d give to any new parent, it would be to understand your little one’s wake windows! Not only are they crucial to good quality, restorative sleep but most importantly they allow you to be responsive to your baby’s sleep needs.
🌙 In order to sleep well and for little one to have the best chance of getting to sleep calmly, they need to be doing so when they have enough sleep pressure, but they aren’t overtired. This optimal time for sleep happens at the end of their ideal wake window.
🌙 No-one gets this right every time, and with baby classes, siblings and general life to contend with it’s unrealistic to think it will be perfect every time!
🌟 However, by being aware of what your little one’s wake windows are, you are able to adapt your approach to sleep to accommodate this 🌟
For example, you’ve been out for lunch with a friend and your little one has now been awake longer than their optimal wake window - that’s ok! Because you’re aware of this, you can choose to get them to sleep in the easiest way possible (eg. pram, car, carrier) rather than attempting a cot nap, which they are likely to struggle with given they are now in overtired territory!
🌟 It’s not about rigidity - it’s about knowledge, and using it to maximise your chances of good sleep based on where your day takes you! 🌟
