Over the course of the play, Schreck addresses themes such as women's rights, immigration, domestic abuse, and the history of the United States. Schreck varies the time period in which the play takes place, performing some scenes as her modern self and others as her fifteen-year-old self-participating in Constitutional debate contests. What the Constitution Means to Me has received accolades such as a nomination for Best Play in the 73rd Tony Awards and a finalist spot for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Based on Heidi Schreck, a former teen debate champion who traveled the country giving speeches about the Constitution. MIKE/LEGIONNAIRE - he/him. Any ethnicity. Late 30s and up. Heidi’s friend. First appears as an assertive American Legionnaire monitor, a stickler for the rules. Later turns into Heidi’s ally and assistant, reflective and genuine, representing positive male energy, gay. ​TEEN DEBATER - she/her or they/them. Any ethnicity. 13-18 year old high school debater. Intelligent and passionate. Appears only in Act 2. Ideally experienced in speech and debate. Comfortable with some improvisation within the confines of the show.
