To commemorate their first year of marriage, Mark Sklarz gave his wife, Judy, stock certificates. After all, it was the paper anniversary. Years later that gesture of love would transform into a gift from the couple to their beloved synagogue. Over time the stock certificates appreciated significantly, but the Sklarz never sold them. Instead they used their good fortune to establish the Sklarz Family Fund for the Rabbi Herbert N. Africa is a vast and vibrant continent - so expansive, in fact, that India, China, and the United States could all fit inside it with space to spare. But its scale isn’t just geographical. Africa is richly diverse, shaped by a mosaic of cultures, languages, and histories across its regions. With over 2,000 languages spoken, including more than 500 in Nigeria alone, Africa’s diversity runs deep. It’s this intricate tapestry of difference that makes the continent so unique. Few people will view Africa through the lens of its potential, because the well-trodden narrative of poverty, aid and war is too well known to allow us to really think afresh about the continent. We see it differently. Africa has a redemptive potential in God to be the greatest blessing to the world over the next few decades. The best charities are over one hundred times more effective than others. 🤯 We recently published the first-ever global review of how different charities vary in cost-effectiveness when it comes to improving wellbeing. Our research has shown that you can make a far greater difference to world happiness at no extra cost to yourself, simply by changing where you donate. This is what we published in this year’s World Happiness Report, inside chapter 8. Imagine you donated $1000 to a random charity. Pretty good! Now imagine if you donated that $1000 to one of the most cost-effective charities. This could be as impactful as a $100,000 donation to a random charity. How did we measure wellbeing for the purpose of this research? We quantify the improvement in wellbeing using wellbeing-years (WELLBYs) i.e. a measure of how much a person’s happiness improves and for how long. One WELLBY = a 1-point increase on a 0–10 life satisfaction scale for one person for one year. For example, if your wellbeing increased from 6/10 to 7/10 for two years, that would be 2 WELLBYs. WELLBYs are different to QALYs or DALYs but work similarly, for example: 😞 Depression is linked to a 1.3-point decrease in life satisfaction. 👨‍🔧 Unemployment reduces life satisfaction by 0.5 points. 💲 Doubling income increases life satisfaction by just 0.2 points. 💍 Getting married is linked to a 0.3-point increase. This graph from our research published in the World Happiness Report shows how many WELLBYs different charities create per $1,000 donated. @pureearthnow, which works on reducing lead exposure, creates over 100 WELLBYs per $1,000. Mental health interventions like @makestrongminds and @friendshipbench_global also score highly. Some charities, however, generate fewer than 1 WELLBY per $1,000, meaning they are hundreds of times less effective than the best options. This research reinforces what effective giving is all about: some donations do radically more good than others. Placemaking is a comprehensive approach to community development where residents are encouraged to connect and contribute toward a shared vision for their community, and work together toward achieving that vision – helping people feel connected to one another and their community. 💫 Placemaking should enable positive economic, physical and social changes in the community, increasing civic engagement, pride in place, and/or nurturing the creative economy. 💫 Projects, whether focused on capacity building, planning or implementation, should demonstrate how community participation in decision making around issues that affect their quality of place will strengthen development capacity or improve discourse. 💫 Outcomes may also involve making visible improvements to community gathering spaces, including increased visibility of the arts, that respect the local landscape, people and culture. Our upcoming funding round is open to Itasca-area non-profit organizations, with letters of inquiry opening March 7th.
