The flood situation in Odisha’s Kendrapara district has turned grim, with nearly 30 villages in Rajnagar block cut off due to the swelling Brahmani river. For four consecutive days, rising waters have inundated large areas of Pattamundai and Aul blocks, pushing thousands into crisis. In low-lying villages, water has entered homes, schools, and health centres, leaving residents stranded without food, clean water, or basic sanitation. Many are forced to stay on elevated spots with their livestock, fearing crocodile attacks at night, which are common in this delta region. On March 28, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, devastating the regions of Mandalay, Naypyidaw, Sagaing, and Shan state. 3,769 deaths have been reported, more than 5,100 people injured, and an estimated 17.2 million individuals affected. The earthquake struck a country already gripped by several health crises and conflict, compounding the challenges communities face. Limited resources, staff, and supplies have left some facilities overburdened and struggling to respond to the growing health needs. 83-year-old Kyiv local Nataliia was at home when her neighbours told her about an incoming air raid. She fled to her bomb shelter, but even there she felt the force of the explosions. “I heard explosions; four of them were so powerful that the walls trembled in our shelter. I was disoriented. It’s a terrible stress at my age,” she said. The blasts shattered the windows of her apartment, but UNHCR’s local partner Rokada provided the materials she needed to repair the damage. “I am very thankful for the support. Twice a week, market days bring a buzz of activity to aggregation centers across Cox’s Bazar. For women like Senowara, it’s more than a place to sell fresh produce—it’s a step towards independence. As the sole provider for her children and grandchildren, Senowara started farming through WFP’s livelihoods programme in 2021. Today, she grows papayas, raises hens, and sells her produce to local retailers—including those supplying WFP’s ‘fresh food corners’ in Rohingya refugee camps. In one of Bangladesh’s poorest and most disaster-prone districts, these markets are lifelines. They ensure women farmers earn a steady income while providing nutritious food to their communities. #Bangladesh has made remarkable economic progress in recent years, yet 37 million people still face acute food insecurity. It continues to host nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees who rely on humanitarian support to survive. For women like Senowara, their income means the difference between putting food on the table or skipping meals. 🌍WFP’s programmes support women by providing resources and training—empowering them to contribute to the economy, improve food security, and achieve self-sufficiency. It’s a concept that is widely used within the humanitarian field, economics and agriculture. It may in fact be a box or a parcel of food. 🟦 What's inside a food basket? The contents vary by location but generally include cereals (like wheat, maize, or rice), pulses (such as lentils and beans), vegetable oil, and iodized salt. WFP prioritizes buying food from local suppliers and increasing the use of fortified products like wheat flour, maize meal, and rice. 🟦 How do we decide what goes in? We tailor food baskets to local diets and preferences. By monitoring market availability and purchasing habits, we ensure that the food provided is culturally familiar. Depending on market conditions, WFP may also distribute cash or vouchers instead of food items. 🟦 How do we adapt our food basket to cultural norms? WFP respects local food traditions and works with governments to align food assistance with community needs.
