The redevelopment of Canterbury Museum on Rolleston Avenue is revealing heritage facades that have not been seen for decades. The northern gable end of the 1877 Benjamin Mountfort building on Rolleston Avenue is now visible for the first time since it was covered up by the construction of the Centennial Memorial Wing between 1955 and 1958. Large excavators have peeled away a concrete wall, which stood just a couple of centimetres away from the historic stone façade. What they found underneath was the intact wall looking almost exactly as it did in the early 1950s. The heritage walls will be cleaned and revived so they can become a key feature of the new Museum entrance and atrium – viewed through a new glass curtain wall. 🔵 The Druze: A community rich in history, tradition, and resilience. Originating in the 11th century, the Druze are an Arabic-speaking ethno-religious group with deep roots in the Middle East. While their faith remains closed to new converts, their heritage continues to flourish across Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. The Druze have been part of the Land of Israel for centuries, with waves of immigration dating back to the 11th century. Today, around 150,000 Druze live in Israel, primarily in the Galilee, the Carmel region, and the Golan Heights. Recognized as an independent religious community, the Druze have made significant contributions to Israel’s society, military, and governance while preserving their unique cultural identity. The National Library of Israel preserves Druze heritage, from rare manuscripts to historic photographs, documenting the community’s religious, cultural, and social legacy. She provided a large number of antique artifacts, which added authenticity and enriched the exhibition’s cultural and historical value. Anisa Tarboosh is one of Aden’s most prominent intellectuals, with an extensive record in various fields since the 1970s. She began her career at the Textile and Spinning Factory from its inception, holding multiple positions, including Nursery Supervisor, Union Representative, Secretary of the Public Relations Manager, Personnel Manager, and Board Member. She also holds a Diploma in Small Projects and a Diploma in Business Administration and Secretarial Studies. Her expertise extends beyond administration and industry, as she has also been involved in vocational and handicraft development. She served as Director of the Sewing Workshop, Director of Pensions and Retirement Administration, and most recently, she became President of the Sewing and Handicraft Development Association and Executive Director of Afaq Aden Institute for Training and Vocational Employment. Her generous support and active contribution to the heritage pavilion’s success reflect her passion for preserving Aden’s heritage and promoting cultural identity for future generations.
