Hospice at Home - Warden’s Walk Kirk Michael Hikers Trail - Leg 1 – 15 June 2025 We have two more walks to complete the Hospice at Home Wardens Walks challenge; the Hikers Trail Legs 1 and 2. After rain delays and then the TT – couldn’t access either the start or finish for a fortnight! - Leg 1 will now take place on 15 June followed by the finale, the Hikers Trail Leg 2, on Sunday 29 June. The map for these can be downloaded from the DEFA website, here, referred as Kirk Michael Hikers Trail. This shows the full trail; however as the full Hiker’s Trail is 17 kilometres overall and identified as “strenuous” we decided to do this walk in two legs. We recce’d both legs of the Hiker’s Trail last year and with Ron’s electronic maps found our way without too many false turnings; hopefully the trails not become overgrown since! Arrangements: ➢ Date – 15 June ➢ Meet- 10am Glen Helens carpark ➢ Finish - Sartfield forest carpark - Waypoint 14 - on B10 road from Brandywelll. ➢ Carpooling- as this is not a circular walk, please arrange with friends to leave a car at the Sartfield forest carpark. Whilst we won’t leave anybody stranded up there it will be simpler if all make own arrangements to return to Glen Helens once hiking is finished! ➢ Lunch - We’ll arrange with the Mitre Pub in Kirk Michael. "I was in the dark for 21 months; now I see you all." The team at Revived Soldiers Ukraine charity in Philadelphia has successfully completed its efforts to assist the seriously wounded Ukrainian soldier, Pavlo Nazarenko, a sapper from the 110th Brigade of the Zaporizhzhia Territorial Defense Forces. Pavlo, the chief architect of Zaporizhia, volunteered to defend Ukraine from the first days of the full-scale invasion. As a sapper in the 110th brigade, he fought in some of the most dangerous areas of the Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions. In July 2023, Pavlo and his unit were attacked by an enemy helicopter. Shrapnel from a shell that exploded nearby pierced his armor, resulting in the loss of his left hand and damage to both eyes, which caused him to lose his sight. His comrades provided first aid and promptly evacuated him from the battlefield, saving his life. In Ukraine, one of Pavlo's eyes was removed, and a prosthesis was installed. A decision had to be made about his remaining eye, as he could only see the silhouettes of people. The Revived Soldiers Ukraine team chose to try to restore the vision of our sapper, inviting him to Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia—one of the leading ophthalmological clinics in the country, ranked 2nd nationally. Since the establishment of the Revived Soldiers Ukraine in 2015, the hospital has actively collaborated with our team, providing assistance to severely wounded defenders of Ukraine. The hospital's director, Julia Haller, stated, "We will fight Putin together" in March 2017. Thanks to the efforts of leading ophthalmologist Dr. Clark Chang, Pavlo was fitted with specialized lenses that allowed him to regain his vision after the complex injury. One of our managers, Nelya Prysiazhniuk, accompanied Pavlo to the appointment, and she recalled with tears in her eyes Pavlo's reaction: "Nelya, I see your face!" In addition to restoring his vision, we helped Pavlo select attachments for his amputated arm for swimming and shooting from Prosthetic Innovations. The entire treatment process for Pavlo Nazarenko lasted three months, with the total expenses for the foundation amounting to $10,110. During his time in the USA, Pavlo actively participated in our charitable initiatives and attended many Revived Soldiers Ukraine events. Notably, he joined the Ukraine Action Summit in Washington, organized by the American Coalition for Ukraine, where he, along with other veterans, urged American politicians to strengthen their support for Ukraine. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to helping Pavlo in the USA. Together, we accomplished something remarkable—restoring the sight of the former architect of Zaporizhzhia. As we know, there are no former professionals in their field! Головний архітектор міста Запоріжжя, Павло з перших днів повномасштабного вторгнення добровільно став на захист України. Сапер 110-ї бригади ТРО воював у найгарячіших точках Запорізької та Донецької областей. У липні 2023 року Павло разом з його підрозділом потрапив під обстріл ворожого гелікоптера. Осколки розірвавшогося поряд снаряду пробили броню, внаслідок чого Павло втратив кисть лівої руки і ушкодив обидва ока втративши зір. Його побратими надали першу допомогу та оперативно евакуювали з поля бою, врятувавши йому життя. Павлу видалили одне око та поставили протез в Україні. Питання постало, що робити з іншим оком. Павло міг бачити тільки силуети людей. Команда благодійного фонду Revived Soldiers Ukraine вирішила спробувати відкоригувати зір нашому саперу і ми запросили Павла до Wills Eye Hospital в Філадельфіі- одна із провідних офтальмологічних клінік країни, що посідає 2-ге місце в національному рейтингу США. Ще з моменту заснування фонду Revived Soldiers Ukraine у 2015 році, шпиталь активно співпрацює з нашою командою, надаючи допомогу важкопораненим Захисникам України, і директор шпиталю Julia Haller висловилась «З Путіним будемо боротися разом» (Березень 2017). Завдяки роботі провідного офтальмолога, доктора Clark Chang, Павлові було підібрано індивідуальні спеціалізовані лінзи, які дозволили йому відновити зір після складної травми. В той день до лікаря Павла відвезла наша Неля Присяжнюк, яка зі сльозами на очах прокоментувала реакцію Павла- «Неля, я бачу твоє обличчя!» Окрім зору ми ще допомогли Павлові підібрати насадки на ампутовану руку для плавання і стрільби з Prosthetic Innovations. На все лікування Павла Назаренко пішло 3 місяці і наші витрати фонду склали $10,110. Протягом лікування у США, Павло активно долучився до наших благодійних ініціатив, став учасником багатьох заходів Revived Soldiers Ukraine. Зокрема Ukraine Action Summit у Вашингтоні, організованого American Coalition for Ukraine, де разом з іншими ветеранами закликав американських політиків до посиленої підтримки України.
