“Ride your horse forward!” is, generally, good advice. Horses are born to move forward. A horse who goes honestly forward is happier, straighter, easier to maneuver, and more enjoyable to ride. I’ve re-started a good number of horses who rear, buck, bolt, or balk I’ve always found that, once they figure out how to go honestly forward instead, these behaviors stop. Horses learn to resist when their riders hang on to the reins, either out of fear, or out of a misguided notion of how to achieve contact and connection. Pulling a horse’s nose to his chest leaves him with nowhere to go but upward, backward, or into shut-down mode. Teaching him to go honestly forward is the only way out of these unpleasant and often dangerous habits. And once a horse goes honestly forward, introducing honest contact and connection is easy. That said, we don’t want just any old kind of forward. We don’t want a tight, quick kind of forward. We don’t want a rushing, fast kind of forward. We don’t want an out-of-control, runaway kind of forward. We don’t want the horse to go forward from a place of tension, fear, or stress. What kind of forward do we want instead? A forward rooted in relaxation and trust. An eager, happy, elastic kind of forward that feels good to horse and rider alike. How do we get there? With inexperienced, shut down, or anxious horses, building up to going honestly forward can take a while. A horse who does not feel confident or balanced with a rider on his back needs to find confidence and balance first, through slow, reassuring, strenghtening work in hand and under saddle. A horse who does not understand he can and should move forward needs to learn that it’s ok. A horse who has learned to ignore a gripping, constantly squeezing leg or constatly kicking heels needs to be reminded what the rider’s aids mean. A horse who equates forward with tension and rushing needs to learn to find calm and trust in his rider before we reintroduce the idea. So, yes: please ride your horses forward - but only the good, honest kind of forward. It’s a crucial difference that took me many years to figure out.

When I first got into horses, I always dreamed 💭 of having a deep connection with my own horse — one where he felt happy, healthy, and strong. And I also dreamed of seeing his beauty shining in those stunning collected movements. So I did everything they told me to: natural horsemanship, groundwork, liberty, biomechanics, dressage, mindset work… you name it. And sure, some things worked and looked okay on the outside… But the harder I tried, the more my horse shut down — and the further away real, health-building collection seemed to drift. He still looked and felt disconnected. Unhappy. Weak. Even when things seemed “fine” to others… I knew in my heart: This wasn’t the connection I was longing for and I surely wasn’t the partner for my horse I was dreaming of. And worse — the way I achieved things made me feel awful 😫 Like I was demanding and forcing something that didn’t feel right for either of us. I kept hearing👂🏼: “He’s not built for collection.” “He has the wrong conformation.” “He’s too unathletic. Too old. Too ordinary…” And I almost believed it. I almost gave up on him… and on me. Until I stopped trying to fit into their mold and blindly follow outdated training methods. And that’s when everything changed 🦋 Together with Tony, we created a new way. - - - ENGAGING THE HINDQUARTERS - - - Have you hear the expression "engage the hindquarters" or maybe a judge has told you you need more engagement? 🐴 Did you wonder what they were talking about? 🐴 Maybe you know, but you don't now what to do about it. I often mention the term “engaging the hindquarters”, especially in the comments on Virtual Trail Rider Challenge score cards and at clinics. So, I am going to take a few minutes to explain the term. 🤠 What is “engaging the hindquarters?” 🤠 The hind quarters are engaged when the horse is driving forward from behind. The hind quarters are the horse’s source of power. It is the horse will take deep steps with the hind feet. A good goal is to have your horse’s hind feet step into the tracks of the front feet. Their gaits will look more fluid and graceful and are comfortable to ride. Engaging the hindquarters is the first step towards real collection. Real collection is not a “head set.” The opposite is when the horse’s back is hollow (low) and they are heavy on the forehand. A horse who is heavy on the forehand drags their self around, is rough to ride, and has a weak top line. The hind feet are out behind the horse and often take little steps which do not reach under the horse. This horse often times has its head up. Hint: In many situations a high headed horse can be changed by engaging the hindquarters and strengthening the back rather than using a tie down. So there you go! I would love to help you learn how to engage your hindquarters.
