Shop for Tax Compliance
At The Single Malt Shop, we don’t just sell whisky. We sell peace of mind - because every bottle you order is sold 100% compliant with EU VAT and excise laws.
Many consumers assume that if a web shop in one EU country (say, Spain or Germany for example) charges VAT and ships to another country (like Sweden or France for example), that’s all there is to it. But that’s not true. EU law *requires* that excise duty and VAT must be remitted in the *destination country* – not where the seller is based.
If a vendor pays Spanish VAT and excise, but ships to Sweden without paying Swedish duties, the risk is high: customs may seize the package, and you’ll end up paying Swedish VAT and excise again, possibly with penalties or handling fees.
Our compliance process is iron‑clad:
• We register and report sales, excise and VAT in each destination country (in EU).
• We pay excise duty and VAT according to rates in the recipient country, as required by EU Directive 92/83/EEC and its amendment Directive 2020/1151 (effective January 2022). In effect - and this is the important difference - the taxation takes place in the country of actual consumption.
Thanks to recent EU enforcement initiatives—including the VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) reforms and strengthened OSS/IOSS frameworks—cross-border alcohol sales are increasingly monitored and scrutinized across the EU.
This is welcomed by us, and by the whisky industry in general.
At The Single Malt Shop, we eliminate any and all risks for you:
• No customs surprises.
• No second‑round VAT or excise charges.
• No undetected penalties or delays.
=> Choose a fully compliant supplier who pays taxes where they belong: in the recipient country. That’s why our prices may look slightly higher up front than ”certain” shops, but they include all local duties, offering a truly transparent, reliable, and worry‑free experience.
The way it should be done, said simply!
