Powerful levy

“Goodman JFS is a lifeline for so many. It feels like home to us.” Jane and Bruce Levy have been donors to Goodman JFS for more than 20 years, but their connection goes back even further. “For each of us, the journey started differently. Bruce was a young engineering student from Israel when Saint Louis JFS gave him an interest-free loan to return home and fight in the 1973 war. He paid it back, but he never forgot what that support meant at such a critical time. For Jane, it started with delivering food to Holocaust survivors. Meeting them changed everything. It created a deep desire to do more. That led to serving on the Board of Directors and eventually becoming Board Chair.” Their message is simple but powerful: “We want to do all we can to help those in need, and this is the perfect organization for us to do so. Goodman JFS is there for all of us.” We’re deeply grateful to Jane and Bruce for their commitment, compassion and decades of service to our community. 💙 #DonorSpotlight #CommunitySupport #Donate #DoingGOOD

Brand-new independence

In the heart of Dublin City, these words are being shared over cups of tea at Jane’s Place. Jane’s Place is a sanctuary for women in crisis. A drop-in centre, where there’s always a hot shower waiting, the tea is steaming and someone to listen. When you’ve suffered life on the streets, when you know the trauma of violence, or if you’re silently battling addiction, with nowhere to turn – Jane’s Place is here. This brand-new service has already supported more than 150 women this year – and demand is growing. The service is donor-funded. And your help is urgently needed to keep the service open for another year. To welcome women. To guard her safety. To protect her independence. To help her heal. Will you give a gift to Jane’s Place today?

At SWEC, we know that real change comes from the ground up—and we're honored to stand alongside some of the fiercest organizations fighting for economic and racial justice in Washington. 🌲 Firelands Workers United/Trabajadores Unidos is organizing rural workers—mill workers, nurses, childcare providers, loggers and more—to build good jobs, safe homes, and healthy communities in the places they call home. 🗣️ Rural People's Voice is calling out an economy rigged against working families and demanding a future where rural folks don't just survive, but thrive—with fair wages, affordable care, and dignity. 🏠 Washington Low Income Housing Alliance is transforming policy through the leadership of those most impacted by housing instability—because every Washingtonian deserves a safe, affordable place to live. ✊ Statewide Poverty Action Network is building grassroots power to fight poverty at its roots—advocating for bold, community-led solutions that center racial and economic equity statewide. We see your work. We're learning from you. And we're proud to be in this movement with you. 💜✨ . . . Join us in shaping a more vibrant SW Washington and beyond. 👇 SWECWa.org

The Asylum Seekers Centre provides a place of support and connection, from on-site healthcare to employment assistance, community groups, and recreational activities. Comfortable diagnosis

Rochelle loves being around other people—she enjoys spending time with her daughter, laughing with her best friend and caring for patients as a nurse for 20 years. But in 2022, a breakdown and diagnosis of bipolar depression and seizure disorder threatened her independence, livelihood and social life. She found hope and community at Goodwill's A Place of Our Own Clubhouse where she met people who truly understood her journey. At the Clubhouse, she learned new skills working at the reception desk where she enthusiastically greets people, answers phones, and gets to know every new member personally. "If I did not have the clubhouse to come to, I would be stuck at home without socialization," admits Rochelle. "The staff really helped me come out of my shell and make me comfortable." Life-changing programs like A Place of Our Own Clubhouse are made possible through the generosity of donors. ❤️ You can help more people like Rochelle find connection and purpose. Street children and children in conflict with the law face severe health challenges, from poor living conditions to malnutrition and disease. Despite free public healthcare, many struggle to access it due to lack of ID, fear of arrest, or inconsistent follow-up care. Medical staff often fail to understand their unique needs, making treatment even harder. . Substance abuse remains widespread, with easy access to cheap drugs like glue and inhalants. Some use them to cope with hardship, while others are trapped in addiction. Government rehabilitation centers exist but lack flexibility, making them unappealing to many children. . Thailand has yet to implement full Harm Reduction policies, which help drug users reduce health risks. In other countries, services like clean syringes and counseling provide safer alternatives, but Thailand still lacks accessible programs. Stigma-free advice, rehabilitation without legal fear, and safe-use education could help break the cycle. . Society must rethink opportunities for children with past drug use or criminal records. Many seek education and jobs but face prejudice. They don’t just need moral lessons—they need real chances to rebuild. Change starts with us: past mistakes shouldn’t define a child’s future. .

Turning Lives Around: Sharon's Story 💫 Sharon* is a young mum whose life has been marked by poverty and domestic violence. From feeling lost and vulnerable, Barnardos supported her every step of the way on her journey to a safer and brighter future. When we first started working with Sharon, she was actively using drugs, couch surfing and involved with the Department of Communities and Justice due to concerns surrounding her ability to care for her unborn child. She already had shared custody of her three older children, aged between four and eight, and had severed ties with immediate and extended family. Sharon had experienced extreme poverty in childhood, leading her down a rabbit hole of abuse, substance misuse and poor mental health. She had limited education opportunities and struggled to find employment. Once she knew she could trust Barnardos, Sharon was willing to break the cycle. She agreed to attend a mother and baby inpatient drug rehabilitation centre for three months, following the birth of her baby. Barnardos worked closely with Sharon during this time, collaborating with other essential services to ensure she was receiving the right level of care after more than a decade of substance abuse. We secured transitional housing for Sharon at the end of her therapy and through strong partnerships with Dandelion and Vinnies, Barnardos furnished her new home. Relieving the financial burden of affording essential items meant Sharon could focus on setting up a safe environment for her baby and work towards reconnecting with her older children. Despite having to rely solely on parenting Centrelink payments, Sharon did her best to provide for her children. She was able to move into a three-bedroom property, arranged by housing services, after a year in transitional housing. The sense of pride and gratitude she feels for this home is clear as she continues to build a life free from poverty. She has also achieved two milestones once thought impossible: obtaining her driver’s licence and purchasing a car with a NILs loan, granting her newfound independence. Sharon has since secured her first job, demonstrating remarkable commitment despite mental health setbacks. The impact of intergenerational poverty remains a constant battle for Sharon, especially as the cost-of-living crisis continues to place financial strain on this young mum. But she is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty, so her children can grow up feeling empowered. Barnardos has been privileged to help Sharon throughout her journey and with continued support from her caseworker, paired with Sharon’s determination to create a better life for her children, the future looks bright. *Name changed to protect privacy
