Help researchers fight the flu this fall

Rabies has never spread through marine mammal populations – until now. Left unchecked, this deadly disease has the potential to infect animals throughout the world’s oceans. In South Africa, scientists are tracking a lethal rabies outbreak as it devastates local Cape fur seal populations. This is the first time the virus has jumped from land to marine mammals, and the ramifications of this terrifying new development could be severe. Until very recently, it was assumed that rabies couldn’t infect marine mammals. Now, animal experts are worried that it could jump species once again – possibly infecting whales, orcas and other marine mammals. Our partner, Sea Search, is one of the only teams trying to solve this crisis. But their only research vessel was just destroyed in an unfortunate accident, leaving them with no way to access and monitor the outbreak.
