Healthy legislation
We applaud the bipartisan coalition of elected officials who are working to push an immediate vote on legislation in the House of Representatives to protect federal workers’ freedom to collectively bargain. The House of Representatives has the votes to stop this illegal, union-busting executive order from continuing to strip more than 1 million workers of their voice on the job, and the speaker of the House should not be blocking this bill from coming to a vote.
Federal workers have dedicated their lives to keeping our communities safe and healthy, and they need a voice on the job to continue to defend the essential work they do from the billionaires and anti-union extremists who are trying to rob working people of our power.
Use this link to call your member of Congress. Tell them to act swiftly and compel an immediate vote on the Protect America’s Workforce Act.

UYO COUNCIL CONVENES COMMUNITY DIALOGUE ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
In a bid to strengthen the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in Akwa Ibom State, the Gender-Based Violence Response Unit of Uyo Local Government, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Justice, hosted a town hall meeting on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at the Uyo Traditional Rulers Council Hall, Wellington Bassey Way.
The gathering brought together traditional rulers and community leaders within Uyo LGA to raise awareness regarding gender-based violence and to devise strategies for its eradication.
The 2025 GBV awareness program is designed to foster a culture of respect, dignity, and inclusivity with an emphasis on safeguarding women and girls from violence and harmful practices.
The wife of Uyo Local Government Chairman and President of WALGON in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Akaninyene Uwemedimo Udo, who convened the meeting expressed gratitude to the traditional rulers for their steadfast support and participation. She encouraged them to disseminate information about GBV and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP) within their communities.
Mrs. Ifreke Okpon, Director of Social Development, Education, and Information, Sports and Culture in Uyo, delivered the opening address, extending a warm welcome to all attendees. With the objective of reducing the incidence of gender-based violence, Barrister Emem Ette, Director at the Akwa Ibom State Gender-Based Violence Response Department, reiterated the importance of the VAPP Law 2020. She provided extensive insights into its provisions and the legal consequences associated with each of the offence.
Dr Inemesit Uwah, the wife of the Secretary to the State Government, underscored the necessity of adhering to these laws to cultivate a peaceful community. She noted the significant reduction in gender-based violence since the introduction of these legal statutes and praised the traditional rulers for their collaboration with the Gender-Based Violence Response Department in identifying perpetrators during investigations.
Goodwill messages were conveyed by various traditional rulers, representatives of the Arewa community, members of the University of Uyo community, and other dignitaries present at the town hall meeting.
The event was attended by notable personalities including the wife of the Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Mrs. Joyful Eyo; wife of the Chairman, Uyo Capital City Development Authority, Mrs. Mercy Eka; wife of the Member representing Uyo State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Mrs. Idongesit Uwemedimo Asuquo; Vice Chairman of Uyo Council, Hon. Christiana Bassey; and the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey, alongside his wife, Nsisong and Obonganwan Mfon Udokpo.

WEDNESDAY MUSING:
WHEN CRIMINALS WEAR CAMOUFLAGE - THE ABDUCTION OF HON. JUSTICE E.G. UMOKORO AND THE COLLAPSING EDIFICE OF NIGERIAN SECURITY:
Our collective descent into lawlessness has reached a disgraceful and terrifying new low.
On Saturday, around 7:30PM, Hon. Justice E.G. Umokoro of the Bayelsa State High Court, Yenagoa, was abducted at gunpoint in front of Kilimanjaro Eateries, along the Ekeki axis of the state capital.
Pause and let that sink in: a sitting High Court Judge - a custodian of justice and a symbol of the rule of law - was brazenly snatched from the street like a petty target by gun-wielding criminals dressed in camouflage. The very uniform meant to represent authority and security has now become a cover for terror.
This is no ordinary crime. It is a direct, blasphemous assault on the judiciary - one of the last fragile pillars still holding up our battered republic. Only a few months ago, legal practitioners were gruesomely murdered in Anambra and Benue States. Their killers still walk free. Now, the criminal enterprise has escalated. They no longer just kill in the shadows - they abduct justice in broad daylight.
If judges are no longer safe in Nigeria, who then is?
When those tasked with upholding the Constitution are hunted by the lawless, what hope is left for the ordinary citizen?
What makes this even more chilling is the calculated deception - the use of camouflage uniforms to project false legitimacy. This not only delayed intervention but also completely betrayed public trust. By the time the ruse was uncovered, a High Court Judge had been whisked away - in a state capital, no less - with impunity.
We must now confront a sobering truth: Camouflage is no longer a symbol of protection - it has become the perfect disguise for predators. It must be regulated with urgency. Police officers deployed to civilian spaces must be barred from wearing camouflage. That uniform has been hijacked - weaponized by criminals who now blend seamlessly into our communities, manipulating fear and eroding public vigilance.
Across Nigeria, insecurity festers - from our highways to homes, from farmlands to courtrooms. Criminals grow bolder. Security agencies appear overwhelmed. And the moral authority of the Nigerian state continues to bleed out, slowly but surely.
We cannot afford silence.
The abduction of Hon. Justice E.G. Umokoro is not just another kidnapping - it is a violent blow to the very heart of our democracy. It is a loud, chilling indictment of our security architecture and the government’s capacity to protect its most sacred institutions.
I call on all security agencies - the Police, DSS, Military, NSCDC - to break protocol, collapse silos, and act with unified urgency and uncompromising resolve to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Hon. Justice Umokoro.
Anything less emboldens the enemies of our nation and confirms the collapse of public order.
Enough is enough.
The judiciary must be protected. Our streets must be reclaimed. Camouflage must no longer be a mask for mayhem.
Justice is under siege. And when justice is shackled, none of us is free.

Transparent decision
Court-backed gag order in McSkimming case deepens concerns for public discourse and institutional trust
News that the Former Deputy Police Commissioner obtained a ‘super injunction’ (now partially lifted) restricting press from reporting on allegedly inappropriate use of his work computer is of great concern for public discourse and institutional trust says Stephen Franks, Free Speech Union Council Member.
“It’s emerged that on Friday, Jevon McSkimming received a rare ‘super injunction’ that prohibited media not only from reporting on the allegedly objectionable material found on his work computer, but also the fact he’d sought the injunction.
“This was an outrageous decision by the High Court. An individual’s wish for secrecy must not come at the cost of public confidence in an open and transparent justice system.
“Free speech ensures that the media can report on cases like McSkimming’s, and that the public can scrutinise the actions of officials and decide for themselves whether that conduct is unacceptable or not. Without being free to discuss these matters of public interest, the media, public, and watchdogs lose the ability to assess if and how systems within the Police force failed and if reforms are needed.
“Just last week, we welcomed an IPCA report that found the Police had lied about the details of an unlawful arrest of a protester. And now, we have the High Court issuing a gag order to restrict reporting on a different case related to Police conduct.
“A service we can’t trust, coupled with gag orders by the High Court, is a disaster-in-waiting. Transparency and the ability to discuss the conduct of our officials is essential if New Zealand is to trust its key institutions.
“The High Court should be defending Kiwis’ rights to seek, receive and impart information, not limiting it, especially when it’s related to how Police are using public time and resources.”

Affordable hiding
The TN state legislature is wrapping up for the year. They had many opportunities to address the affordable housing crisis. And protect renters from predatory landlords. Instead, they’ve done virtually NOTHING. Join other renters around Tennessee to fight for what we need. Our state representatives and senators will only listen when we take our housing crisis to their doorstep. Join our call on Wednesday, April 23rd at 6pm CDT / 7pm EDT. Registration link:

Curious what our state government could have done? Here’s a list of bills that have FAILED, were WITHDRAWN, STUCK in a committee, or REMOVED:
Affordable Housing and Tenant Protection Act (would allow local governments to control how much landlords can increase rents; increase funding for affordable housing, and more) - STUCK
Rental Property Registry & Multi-Dwelling Registry (2 separate bills). Would stop landlords from hiding behind LLCs so that tenants would actually know who owns their property. Especially important when tenants need to address hazardous conditions & maintenance problems - 1 FAILED, 1 REMOVED
Homes not Hedge funds Act: would prevent certain businesses from buying 100+ single-family homes in some counties. This would reduce price-gouging & runaway gentrification - FAILED
