Preservation along Kittatinny Ridge 👏 This week, the first conservation project through the new Carbon County Open Space program has officially come to fruition.
“Nearly two-thirds of the Kittatinny Ridge are privately owned by thousands of individual landowners,” said Jack Stefferud, senior advisor of land protection for Natural Lands. “What’s more, the region includes nine of the top 20 fastest growing counties in the state, making it vulnerable to both residential and commercial development. Thanks to the voters, this project is just the beginning of preserving land in Carbon County.”

President Joe Biden just designated two new national monuments in California: Chuckwalla National Monument and Sáttítla Highlands National Monument! Together these monuments will add protections for over 800,000 acres of culturally and ecologically significant land.
Chuckwalla National Monument protects 620,000 acres of fragile desert ecosystem just south of Joshua Tree National Park. The monument is named for the chuckwalla lizard, a native species found in the region. Establishing this monument will help ensure equitable access to nature for local communities, as well as safeguard biodiversity, wildlife habitat, and critical wildlife migration corridors. The area holds cultural, natural, and spiritual significance for Indigenous peoples and includes the homelands of the Iviatim, Nüwü, Pipa Aha Macav, Kwatsáan, and Maara’yam peoples.
With these designations, President Biden has protected more federal land and waters than any other president, about 674 million acres, and made significant progress toward the national goal of protecting 30 percent of America’s lands and waters by 2030.
The establishment of Chuckwalla National Monument also completes the largest corridor of protected lands in the continental United States, according to the White House, which covers nearly 18 million acres stretching approximately 600 miles. This new Moab to Mojave Conservation Corridor protects wildlife habitat and a wide range of natural and cultural resources along the Colorado River, across the Colorado Plateau, and into the deserts of California.

Some of you are familiar with a very lengthy project my companies have been working with the community on since 2007. Known as the String of Pearls trail and open space system, the goal was to create a legacy system of former company timberlands.
I'm so pleased to announce that last week the Great Peninsula Conservancy closed on the LAST key parcel in that vision. a 467-acre property known as the Divide. With it, the system now includes 5,000 acres of former company timberlands that will be enjoyed by the community forever. The attachments have the details.
The Forest and Bay Coalition was an informal group that worked for years on this vision. It included Kitsap County, the Suquamish and Port Gamble S'Klallam tribes, North Kitsap Trails Association, Visit Kitsap, Forterra, Pope Resources, Rayonier, the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, and so many more people and organizations. It is the greatest example of collaboration (in a world that today is so divided) I've witnessed in Kitsap County and shows how far we can get when we all focus on what is most important. My personal thanks to all our partners in this effort.
Behind the scenes this closing was a TOUGH transaction for both side; lots of complexity. I want to give a huge shout out to GPC. They are Kitsap's very own, homegrown conservation group and they are a huge asset to the community.
If you are so moved please consider CONTRIBUTING to them while there is still time in the 2024 fiscal year. The link is:
