STORAGE UNITS A WASTE OF MONEY? I get several request to clean out storage units, when talking to my customers I find that they have had their storage unit for years. But now they are tired of the monthly bill associated with storage sheds, so they have decided to contract Junk Geni to clear it out and dispose of items they have paid to keep for years. The frequent things I always hear is I have no idea what most of this is or why I kept it for so long, I don't need it and why would you need your parents furniture from the 70's - 80's, not many people furnish their homes with 70's - 80's style furniture these days or baby clothes from your 25 year old son or daughter. This post is to kind of give you a moment to reflect on that storage unit. I will use a fictitious number for an example, say you are paying $280.00 per month for your unit, you had the unit for 5 years, you barely remember what you have in the unit, you haven't been to the units in months or years, you are spending $3,360.00 per year, over 5 years you have spent $16,800.00 dollars. Now I know some units are far more expensive and some cheaper but the point is, most of what is in that unit you more than likely have no interest in any longer and the rest of the items can be moved to your house. This is where the payment to you comes in, if you have been making that monthly payment, you can continue to make that payment to a separate account that you set up, in 5 years you will have $16,800.00 that you would have given to a storage company. If in 5 years you didn't need to use that money you can continue to save that payment in this manner, 10 yrs, 20 yrs, in the end you have built yourself a great fund for whatever it is you wish to use it on. Usually hiring Junk Geni to clear out a unit is a one and done deal, even if you have more than one load, once we have concluded our work you are no longer paying Junk Geni and you can begin the saving process. The same cannot be said for a storage unit, it is reoccurring monthly, it is a bottomless pit as long as you have one. Even if you have more than one unit, it is possible to condense it down to one unit, instead of paying for multiple units clean and organize your units and condense them down to one. If you are a company those units are taking away form your company, most of the items you may be storing you most likely will never ever use again and items go out of date, they may longer be the direction of your company,, so you have 3 or 4 storage units when you may only need 1 or 2. For a company money not spent to a storage unit is money you can use for advertisement, employees, upgrades, expansion. On the average a person that is using a storage shed forgets what it is that is in the shed, they only know that the bill comes in once a month.
