In honor of America’s earliest celebration of Independence Day in 1783—a day of thanksgiving, peace, and commemorating the end of the Revolutionary War—Old Salem will host a festive historical event centered on the theme of “Becoming American.” Interpretation throughout the historic district will explore the Revolutionary era, the Moravian experience during the war, and how diverse communities contributed to shaping the new nation. All historic buildings will feature themed interpretation for the day. Guests of all ages can enjoy special hands-on activities including a fire-pump bucket brigade, historical games, and a patriotic flag scavenger hunt. The Vogler House will offer historical ice cream demonstrations throughout the day. Live music will set the tone: · 10:00am –The Guilford Courthouse Fife & Drum Corps (Salem Square) · 11:00am – Costumed Moravian Brass Band (Salem Square) · Afternoon – Appalachian Strings (The Single Brother’s House) Firearm demonstrations will take place at the Tavern Meadow throughout the day at 11:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 3:00pm. Gather at the square for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at 12:00pm and 2:00pm, immediately followed by a guided walking tour of the historic district. Fire-pump bucket brigade activities will be held at the pump on the square at 11:30am, 1:30pm, & 2:30pm. All activities are included with general admission.

A Taste of History: Seeing the Old West Through New Eyes Step into the past with A Taste of History: Seeing the Old West Through New Eyes, a unique series of immersive, day-long events that bring fresh perspectives to the stories of the American West. Through guided experiences, historical interpretation, and engaging storytelling, you'll explore how the settlement of the American West can be understood as both a triumph and a tragedy, depending on perspective. As you journey through the rich histories of each location, participants will also be treated to bite-sized tastes of historic foods—dishes that people living in this places during the 19th and early 20th centuries would have eaten. In Elkhorn Ghost Town we will immerse ourselves in the history of this unique Montana mining town, a family-centric community, We will visit the Elkhorn cemetery, hearing stories of the people who lived and died in this mining town inhabited by immigrant families. Join us in Elkhorn Ghost Town on June 20. This program runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offer “tastes” of history throughout the day. Attendees are responsible for arranging their own transportation to each location. Admission is $65 for members and $68 for nonmembers. Come for the stories—stay for the flavors of the historic West. This adventure will be led by Extreme History's Crystal Alegria and Jennifer Hill, an Associate Teaching Professor at Montana State University with an emphasis on Culinary History, Women's History, American West, Gender and Reproductive History. Jennifer is the author of Birthing the West: Mothers and Midwives in the Rockies and Plains. Crystal and Jennifer will be joined by experts at each location, to help tell these stories and interpret the west through storytelling, food experiences and place-based learning. "Rome wasn't built in a day… but Mount Snowdon? Conquered in 9½ hours— by Romans in full kit!" This weekend, three determined members of Roman Tours took on the incredible challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon wearing full Roman auxiliary gear— including studded, flat-soled caligae (definitely not your typical mountain attire!). Together, the team brought history to life with every step to the summit and back. Along the way, we handed out over 100 leaflets promoting our partner Park in The Past and our upcoming 'Auxilia' event at the end of May. We had fantastic conversations and shared many laughs with very surprised hikers, many of whom felt like they had traveled back in time.
