National Kidney Month: A Milestone for Transplant Care The government has long maintained a policy that while it provides assistance for a patient’s kidney transplant, the responsibility for post-transplant maintenance medication falls entirely on the patient. While this may appear fiscally responsible, it ignores the reality that most individuals who rely on government support cannot afford the lifelong cost of these essential medicines. These medications suppress the immune system to prevent the body from rejecting the donated kidney, leaving patients immunocompromised and in need of continuous support for the rest of their lives. PhilHealth’s recent move to provide lifetime financial support for post-kidney transplant patients is a groundbreaking step in the country’s fight against chronic kidney disease. For the first time, post-transplant patients will finally receive the support they have so bravely fought for over the past decades. With renewed hope, they can now focus on recovery and long-term wellness.
