Perfect speckled

Introducing a speckled wood butterfly that graced me with its presence this evening..… Thought this beauty would be the perfect reminder that today marks the start of the Big Butterfly Count. Between today, Friday 18th July and Sunday 10th August choose a place to spot butterflies and moths. Watch for 15 minutes. Then record which species you see. For more details and to register your count go to: 💻 http://linktr.ee/butterflyconservation This count helps identify important trends in species that will assist in planning how to protect butterflies from extinction, as well as understanding the effect of climate change on wildlife. Butterflies are beneficial to humans and the environment in several ways. They act as important pollinators, contributing to plant reproduction, and are indicators of a healthy ecosystem. Additionally, they play a role in the food chain and can even help control certain plant pests. Furthermore, butterflies are beautiful and can bring joy, making them valuable for mental well-being. If we want to be able to keep enjoying photographing butterflies & enjoy the benefits they provide; taking part in this count is a must! #butterfliesofworld #butterfly #butterflyconservation #savebutterflies #bigbutterlycount #butterfliesofinstagram #charme_of_macro #insectsofinstagram #insectphotography #lensloves_nature #exquisitepics20_macro #9vaga_insects9 #photofeaturemacro #onceupon_a_macro #macro_moms #nuts_about_macro #amazingshots_macro #macro_perfection #exq20_july25 #macro_brilliance #macro_area #fiftyshades_of_nature #best_moments_macro #nt_natures_treasure #excellent_bestmacro #intgardenzone #perfect_macro #wholelottabugs #insectlovers #insects_of_our_world

The sawfish, with its sword-like snout, is a biological marvel. This rare species has been found as far as 800 kilometres inland, travelling deep into rivers like the Victoria River in the Northern Territory — a sign of its incredible journey through freshwater systems. Scientists were surprised to find it so far inland, in Wattie Creek, south of Darwin. But local Gurindgi ranger, Philip Jimmy, had seen rock art of the sawfish growing up in the area – possibly painted by a hunter as a reminder of the creature's existence in these waters. But today, this ancient species faces multiple threats to existence, including gillnetting in the NT commercial barra fishery. Female sawfish return to breed in the rivers they are born in, making each river system vulnerable to a localised extinction. Let’s not lose them on our watch. ✍️ If you're in the NT, you can help protect the sawfish by signing this petition: https://www.topendcoasts.org.au/protect_from_gillnets_amcs 📰 Read the full ABC story: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-16/sawfish-find-surprise-indigenous-rock-art/9662032

This week’s featured loon is a female who was originally banded on Massabesic Lake in 2014, a year when she hatched chicks. This summer, she is at least 14, but more likely 17 or older. Her band combination is: left leg green over orange, right leg white over silver. Unfortunately, this female has not had an easy go of it. In 2014 (the year she was first banded), she and her mate produced 1 chick, which survived to fledging age. Sadly, that is the only chick that she has fledged in her documented nesting history. In 2015, this loon and her banded mate both returned to the same territory on the lake, nested together, and hatched two chicks. Unfortunately, a neighboring pair of loons on the lake, who were not successful at hatching chicks of their own that year, noticed this pair’s success and began intruding into the territory. In the course of the frequent fighting, the chicks were both lost. In 2016, this loon and her mate again returned to their part of the lake, but though they were seen testing out nest sites, they never actually put down eggs. In 2017, her banded mate moved on to greener pastures, winning his way into control of a nearby territory on the lake, which had a better history of nesting success. That summer, this female remained on the original territory and was joined there by a new, unbanded male. They did not nest, likely because they were frequently dealing with intruding loons. The same story played out from 2018–2020—though this female and her unbanded mate were consistently present on the territory, they never nested and instead spent their time intruding into other nearby territories. Finally, in 2021, they attempted to nest again on their part of the lake. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be—within a few days of laying their eggs, the loons abandoned their nest for unknown reasons. They did not attempt to nest again that summer. In 2022, there was more turmoil. This loon’s previous mate (the banded male who had partnered with her from 2014–2016 but them moved to a different territory from 2017–2021) was back, having apparently been evicted from his other territory. Now that she had a mate who she’d previously nested successfully with, we hoped that this female might hatch some chicks. But it was not to be—her mate spent much of the summer trying in vain to win back the other territory, so they did not nest. The same story played out in 2023. In 2024, this female once again partnered with the banded male, and he finally seemed to give up on winning back the neighboring territory. They nested successfully and hatched two chicks, this female’s first chicks hatched since 2015. Sadly, the chicks didn’t survive the summer. This summer (2025), she and a new mate (an unbanded male) nested early, and they have hatched two chicks! We wish this family well as they navigate the challenge of raising the chicks to fledging age. To date, this female’s story has been a tough one to follow—in the 11 breeding seasons since we’ve been tracking her, she’s fledged just 1 chick, for a known reproductive rate of 0.09 chicks surviving/year. This is well below the New Hampshire state average, and we hope that things improve for her this summer! Photos courtesy of John Rockwood.

Your month, your endangered animal. Which one are you? Every species featured here is classified as endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, a stark reminder of what’s at stake. Projections suggest that up to 50% of species could be facing extinction by 2050 unless we take bold action now. Conservation works, but not quickly enough to keep pace with the rate of destruction. To build a brighter future, we must embrace radical and innovative solutions like de-extinction. Follow us for more groundbreaking science and extraordinary wildlife. And if you support these remarkable creatures, support these amazing organizations dedicated to protecting them: Zoos Victoria The University of Melbourne Pronatura Noroeste Wildlife Alliance

*The Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) is a critically endangered subspecies of cheetah that once inhabited various regions in Asia, particularly Iran. They are closely related to the African cheetah but have adapted to the unique environmental conditions of their habitat. **Historically, the Asiatic cheetah's range included parts of Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and even India. However, their numbers have drastically declined, and they are now primarily found in Iran. ***Reproduction in the Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) is a crucial aspect of their life cycle and survival. Here are the key points related to their reproduction: (i) Mating: Cheetahs are generally solitary animals, but they come together for mating. Female cheetahs come into estrus (the mating period) approximately every 18 to 23 days. During this time, they release pheromones and vocalize to attract males. (ii) Mating Behavior: When a male and female cheetah encounter each other during the female's estrus, they engage in courtship behavior, which may involve vocalizations, grooming, and nuzzling. Mating can be a brief but intense process, and it may occur multiple times during the female's estrus period. (iii) Gestation: The gestation period for cheetahs is approximately 90 to 95 days. After successful mating, the female becomes pregnant, and the developing embryos are referred to as cubs. (iv) Litter Size: Cheetahs typically give birth to a litter of 3 to 5 cubs, although litters of 1 to 8 cubs have been reported. The number of cubs can vary based on factors such as the age and health of the mother. (v) Birth and Maternal Care: Female cheetahs give birth to their cubs in a concealed den, such as tall grass or rocky outcrops. The cubs are born blind and helpless, and their eyes typically open at around 10 days of age. The mother provides maternal care, including grooming, protection, and nursing (vi) Cub Development: Cheetah cubs are highly vulnerable to predators during their early stages of life, and the mother is diligent in caring for and protecting them. As the cubs grow, the mother introduces them to solid food and teaches them hunting skills.

IT'S AN EMERGENCY! – 13 of the 14 remaining great ape populations on the planet are shrinking in number, and tragically, Grauer’s gorillas are facing the steepest decline of them all: they have lost approximately 60% of their species in the past two decades. Grauer’s gorillas live in the Congo Basin. They act as natural gardeners in their forest home, maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. The situation is dire, and we need you. When you save gorillas, you can save the planet.

Start the year with fascinating facts about loons! 🐦✨ 1️⃣ Did you know North America is home to five species of loons, with the Common Loon being the most familiar? 2️⃣ Loons are migratory birdx, breeding on inland lakes in summer and wintering on oceans—though some stay on southern lakes that don’t freeze! 3️⃣ These birds generally return to the same breeding lakes yearly, which means they often partner with the same mate for several years. But contrary to popular belief, they do not mate for life. Love loons? Subscribe to LPC's E-Newsletter for more: loon.org/newsletter .

🐦 Will You Help Save Birds and Conserve Their Habitats? Birds are facing unprecedented threats, and federal conservation funding is essential to reverse their decline. Programs funded by Congress have already helped bring back iconic species like the Bald Eagle and California Condor from the brink of extinction, but many birds still need our help. From birds listed under the Endangered Species Act like Hawai’i’s ʻIʻiwi to unprotected declining species like the Greater Sage-Grouse, the work is far from over. Unfortunately, proposals currently in Congress underfund agencies and programs that benefit birds. By increasing funding, investing in innovative technologies, and adopting bird-friendly land management practices, programs across the Americas can more effectively conserve vital bird habitats. 📝 Take Action Today: Urge your U.S. Representatives and Senators to support federal conservation funding and help to conserve millions of birds.
