Anita Urang knew something was wrong when her 2 year old daughter Anokhi (name changed) seemed frail, and her tiny frame couldn’t keep up with other children. As a tea estate worker in Assam, Anita spent long hours in the fields, struggling to provide for her family. With two older daughters and limited income, nutritious food and healthcare often felt like luxuries beyond reach. Then came the wake-up call. During a Growth Monitoring Chart (GMC) session, health workers confirmed Anita’s fear—Anokhi was undernourished. Weighing just 7.5 kg and measuring 75.5 cm, she was at high risk of severe health complications. But Anita refused to give up. With the support of the CRY team and Anganwadi workers, she embarked on a mission to save her daughter. Home visits began, where she received crucial nutritional counseling and guidance on government nutrition programs. A special diet plan was crafted, and frontline workers ensured she had access to essential food and care. The journey was not easy. Every meal was a fight against hunger, every health check a test of patience and resilience. But Anita persisted, following the plan with determination. Six months later, the results were nothing short of remarkable when Anokhi’s condition improved. Today, Anokhi is on the path to recovery, her bright eyes once again filled with the spark of childhood. Thanks to a collective effort—Anita’s perseverance, the dedication of Anganwadi workers, and the support of the CRY team—her story is proof that no child should be denied the right to health and dignity. Laos has the highest under-five child mortality rate in Southeast Asia. Children are facing poor nutrition, poverty, and access to education, clean water and sanitation. But UNICEF is always there. From cash transfers to early education programs, our teams are working hard to protect the rights of children in Laos.
