Spectacular crest
What a stunning photo of a female Northern Cardinal that our friend Shawn shared with us! Thanks Shawn! Even though female cardinals aren’t as bright as their male counterparts, their red tail, wings, crest and beak are still pretty spectacular don’t you think?
Did you know that cardinals weren’t always found in Massachusetts? I’m reading that the first documented nesting pair was reported in Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1960. Their range has expanded further northward since that time and they can now be found year-round in some areas as far north as the Canadian border. Here is a link to their Range Map from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology if you are interested
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_Cardinal/maps-range
The cardinal in Shawn’s photo is feasting on a Wild Birds Unlimited safflower seed cylinder. Cardinals LOVE safflower seeds, but do you know who doesn’t? European Starlings. They have a hard time opening its hard shell. European Starlings had been coming in large groups to Shawn’s feeders, chasing all the other birds away, so he is temporarily feeding safflower. We sell safflower in seed cylinders, as loose seed, and it is an ingredient in several of our seed blends.
By the way, rowdy starlings will soon be pairing up to nest, so they won’t be gathering in large groups at our feeders - to the relief of all the other birds trying to eat!
You may be curious about that attractive feeder holding the safflower seed cylinder. It’s called the Birds Choice Hanging Seed Cylinder Feeder and it will hold any of our seed cylinders. We sell this very popular feeder at our store, but not online.

Popular epic
What a striking photo our friend Neale took of a Carolina Wren and Dark-eyed Junco eating at his feeder! Thanks for sharing with us Neale!
Carolina Wrens are a fairly common bird in Massachusetts, but it wasn’t always that way. These non-migratory birds don’t do well in severely cold weather, but with increasingly warmer winters here in the northeast, their numbers have steadily climbed. The exception was the winter of 2015 when we lost a good number of Carolina Wrens due to extreme cold and epic snowfall, which made it extremely hard to find food! According to WCVB, Boston set a record for most snow in a single year receiving 110.6 inches! Worcester received 119.7 inches! Birds in general really came to rely on feeders during the winter of 2015!
It took several years for the Carolina Wren population to rebound, but from what I have read their numbers here in the state have recovered.
It sure has been cold this week and there is a good amount of snow on the ground, so birds are relying a bit more on our feeders for nourishment. Notice in the photo, Neale has his WBU XL Seed Tube Feeder filled with our most popular seed blend, No Mess No Millet. This is a blend of sunflower chips, peanut splits, and tree nuts – all high-fat foods. Birds can lose up to 70-75% of their body fat overnight as they burn the fuel to stay warm, so they will need to eat lots of high fat foods to stay warm.
Other high-fat foods you can put out to help birds stay warm include black-oil sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, and suet.

Hummingbird Feeder
I opened my email this morning and found this gorgeous photo of a male Red-bellied Woodpecker waiting for me! The photo was taken and shared by our friend Neale. Neale always takes such amazing bird photos!
If you feed birds, you probably have Red-bellied Woodpeckers coming to your feeders, but did you know that as recently as the 1940’s and 50’s, this bird would have been a rarity here in Massachusetts? More moderate winters and an increase in bird feeding are believed responsible for the northern expansion of the range of several bird species including the Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal and Tufted Titmouse – all now common at our feeders!
In the wild, Red-bellied Woodpeckers eat a varied diet of insects, seeds, nuts, and fruits. This varied diet makes it easy to attract them to our feeders where they will eat sunflower seeds and chips (shell-free sunflower seeds), peanuts and other nuts, and suet (especially if it contains fruit or insects). They will also sometimes drink nectar from hummingbird and oriole feeders, and eat oranges put out for orioles.
The bird in Neale’s photo was flying in to sample the WBU No Mess Blend of bird food he has in his feeder. This is a mix of sunflower chips, peanuts and millet – yum, that’s some good stuff! The feeder is our Quick-Clean XL Seed Tube Feeder which is great for busy feeders because it holds up to 3.5 quarts of food! This large-capacity feeder allows you to spend less time filling the feeder and more time sitting and watching the birds!
