#highlightseveryonefollowerssubject Subject: Summer's Around the Corner – Help Us Prepare for Baby Season! Hi everyone, Yesterday, it hit me: summer is just around the corner! While I've been prepping, it feels like it's arrived so fast, which is a little scary. As many of you know, summer is the busiest time for all of us rehabbers – it's baby season! That means lots of little ones, plus our usual intake of injured animals. It often leads to little sleep, busy days filled with animal care, and countless rescues. Last year, things started slow, but then it felt like an endless wave of animals, each with their own feeding schedule and special foods. It was incredibly busy, but I was so proud of what we accomplished. This year, I want us to be even more prepared. To get ready for the influx, I've put together a wishlist of immediate needs, and I'll share more items in future posts. Our Immediate Needs Beyond our specific wish list, please remember our ongoing monthly expenses. These include staff payments and electricity. Our weekly food and milk supply alone is currently R1250.00 ($68.78), and I can say with absolute certainty that this will increase significantly as summer approaches. As it becomes impossible for just Stembile and me to manage everything, we also desperately need extra help. This is where you can make a huge difference! We're looking for sponsors to help cover the cost of an extra pair of hands and to contribute to our staff payments. This would be so incredibly appreciated. Our staff work almost every day, and ensuring I have enough funds to pay them at the end of the month is a real stress. By supporting them, you're also helping community members find work and support their families, as we see ourselves as offering a vital community service. Volunteer Accommodation & Financial Overview While we're so grateful for the emails from people wanting to volunteer, most are out of town. At this stage, we don't have accommodation on our property, so they'd need to find their own, which can be very costly. This also means they'd only be able to help during the day, as we couldn't expect them to travel back and forth at night. We do have future plans for volunteer accommodation, but our current focus is getting the sanctuary ready for summer and caring for the animals – that's our top priority right now. Currently, our staff salaries are R6000.00 ($330.12) per month. This doesn't include the extra help we bring in for building projects or for washing and cleaning cages. Electricity alone is around R1000.00 ($55.00), in addition to our weekly expenses. From this, we also need to stock up on medical supplies for our pharmacy. Join our EQUINE CARE TEAM. We work hard, have fun, support each other and make a difference in the lives of the precious equines located at our facility in Micanopy, FL. The job includes feeding, grooming, treating and recognizing injuries and illness. Cleaning some days, but not a regular part of the job. Handling using natural horsemanship techniques. A great opportunity to learn and enhance your skills with natural horsemanship instruction provided. Approx. 20 hrs/wk. with potential for more hours. We are a charitable organization with over 30 years successfully providing rescue, equine facilitated learning, rehabilitation, adoption & sanctuary. Candidates must have reliable transportation, be prompt, self-motivated and want to help the horses and organization do well. West Coast SPCA to Cease Operations in Vredenburg at the End of January 2025 It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of the West Coast SPCA in Vredenburg at the end of January 2025. This decision comes as a result of the Saldanha Bay Municipality being unable to renew the tender due to financial constraints. Since being awarded the tender to run the pound for the Saldanha Bay Municipality in 2017, we have been privileged to provide a much-needed service to the animals and pet owners in the community. Over the years, we have worked hand-in-hand with the municipality to care for countless animals, addressing cases of cruelty and neglect, and reuniting lost pets with their families. We deeply value the incredible working relationship we have enjoyed with the Saldanha Bay Municipality. Their support and collaboration have been instrumental in enabling us to fulfill our mission. We are proud of the positive impact we have made during this time and grateful for the trust placed in us by the community. While this marks the end of an era for the West Coast SPCA in Vredenburg, we take comfort in knowing that our efforts have made a difference. We encourage pet owners to continue prioritizing the health and well-being of their animals and to seek out alternative resources for animal care and welfare in the region. As we prepare for this transition, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Saldanha Bay Municipality, our dedicated staff, volunteers, and the community for their unwavering support.
